anyway i can know if a machine has a firewall installed

hello,

is there any way i can know if a local machine (laptop/desktop) has a firewall installed. i mean a laptop or desktop that i am using, can i do some sort of loopback tests on a range of tcp and udp ports?
 
If your using the machine, Id check in the services to see if there is a firewall service (besides the windows XP one) and you could check in C:\Program Files and see if theres some folders that arent there by default, or ones you recognize as firewall companies

(could also check in add\remove for firewall apps)
