Planning to ship a bass. COD + cashier's check only.

Am I safer this way then with paypal?

My answer is yes. UPS will not let the package go unless it's paid the way you specify.

I should add:

My primary concern is that it's going take me some 5-7 days to get my check. So what if he cancels/stops it by then? Or is this not possible with a cashier's check?

I don't think that's possible with a money order or cashiers checks since it's paid with "cash" but I'm not certain. Unless the consignee reports it lost for some reason.

You can still end up with a fake check/mo. UPS doesn't care if you get a fake check per their COD TOS.

These terms of service apply to C.O.D.:

* UPS will accept C.O.D.s for amounts up to US$50,000.00 per shipment.
* UPS will accept a business or personal check, or another negotiable form of payment.
* At the shipper's request, UPS will accept a cashier's check or money order only.
* UPS will not accept currency in any amount.
* The shipper assumes all risk related to the collection of the payment, including non-payment, insufficient funds, and forgery.

Not really...if you read most of the fine print (unless they changed this recently), it's technically not the agent's responsibility to collect nor verify payment method.

My brother and I had to go do some fools house that the shipper did not collect the COD and then would not pay. He shit bricks when we both showed up at his door. When he tried to use a check we told him we need to go to the bank and get the cash.

It was an Amiga 3000 around 1992ish, I think it was close to a grand...it was a lot of money whatever it sold for.
