Anything wrong with getting vista home basic?

I was looking at the differences between vista home basic and the other editions, and with the exception of aero it seemed like the only thing they added was stuff I already do with free software readily available and decently supported. So assuming I don't care about having a fancy desktop is there a reason to get premium or higher editions?

For a home user, not really.

I do like Aero much better than the Vista Basic theme, though. I'd say it's worth the extra few bucks for an OEM copy.

Other features can be great -- if you want them. Media Center (if you're building an HTPC), bitlocker (if you want good encryption), domain capability, etc. For simple home use, though, Basic can be all that you need, really.

Home Premium is worth the 30$ IMO.

If you don't plan on ever using Aero, which I actually like, or the handful of apps that come with Home premium then Home basic is fine.

On the other hand, the OEM cost at Newegg of Home Basic is $89.99 and $99.99 for Home Premium. Some of the applications that come with home premium, like the DVD Maker are quite good and useful. I was pleasantly surprised with that particular application. Easily worth the $10 difference IMHO.

I have Vegas Movie Studio and DVD Architect, but I find myself using the DVD maker app far more than the Sony product.

Thanks for the advice, when I finally get around to it I'll probably get premium. I wasn't too worried about the price between basic and premium; I was more worried about expense of ultimate edition. For 10$, it looks like aero is worth a try.

Home Premium should suffice for the vast majority of home users.
