Anything out there for $100 that beats a gforce 6600?

Any cards out there that will beat a normal gforce 6600 for $100 or less new/refurbed?

Links to a store if so. 🙂

Alrighty, hehe

I usually run games at 800x600 or 1024x768. I've read reviews of this card giving decent performance in high end games, like doom 3 at decent quality around these resolutions. Hopefully I won't be disappointed 🙂

Any idea if Doom 3 or other games can be played while using TV-Out (S-Video/Composite) on this card?

In my experience the games will run with the tv-out on but they will be a little choppier. With it off you can just enjoy smoother gameplay (ATI 9600 AIW, not the nvidia 6600)

Many 6600s OC to 6600GT speeds on the core. Although they are severely memory bandwidth limitedit does choke performance a bit.

Id honestly say its gonna beat most last gen cards with the exception of the 9700/9800 Pro/XT

Very interesting!

Hmm...I was messing with my numbers and I can do one of two things:

1. 6600 + 1 gig ram(512x2)
or
2. 6600gt + 512 mb ram(512x1)

What do you folks think I should do?

Actually, while I support the idea of much ram as possible, I would opt for the 512 MB route and get the 6600GT. You can easily add another 512MB down the road.

Yeah, I'd say go with the 6600 and 1GB RAM.. given your rez preferences... I have the 660GT and 512MB RAM in my Barton 2500+ and the thing swaps to disk like crazy... especially in HL2. Stutter galore. Luckily I'm getting another 512 stick in about a week or so. My guess is the regular 6600 would be good enough for what you want to do, and the RAM will make it smoother overall.

But that's just me. Of course, going 6600GT and upgrading RAM later definitely future-proofs you, especially if you play older games that don't require as much RAM... then later on you can upgrade the RAM when you have the need (and $$).

Hm. Guess I really didn't answer anything huh!

Can you afford to get 768mb of ram and the 6600gt?

From what I've played on my system, before and after I added more memory, there seems to be a sweet spot in the 768mb area. Games I've been playing have wanted around 400mb or so, and 768 has given me enough head-room to make them happy (enough memory for both the OS and the game to get along together).

Of course, more ram is always better 😉
