Anything out-of-place/incompatible/yucky in this setup?

This is my first draft of the rig from www.microbytes.com. I would appreciate any advice or recommendations you folks may have. I still have a few more weeks to go before purchasing it, so tell me if newer hardware is supposed to be released by then.

EDIT: I tried to find an S940 MOBO, but I couldn't, and the others were listed as incompatible, only this one wasn't.

95% of dvd burners already burn cdrs, so I would get rid of the plextor & replace it with a standard dvd drive so you won't wear out your rw reading everyday discs. The power supply seems like overkill aswell.

Looks good. A quality 400 watt (Antec) would do you fine unless you plan to have A LOT of crap in your case. Not sure of ASrock as a company, I only know of them as cheap socket A mobos mabye someone else could give you more feedback on that.

That s940 FX-53 wont fit in that ASRock mobo (s754/s939). Get a s939 FX-53 and a s939 mobo. Don't bother with the s940 FX since the s940 platform is dead.

Do you really need a Raptor? To be honest, I still cant fill my 80 gig HDD so on a capacity level a Raptor would be fine for me but the price premium for the speed it offers isnt worth it for me. That'd a consideration to make in my opinion.

If you need the speed then buy a Raptor, if not... look at 7200 rpm HDD's.

Thanks, I switched it to the S939 FX-53, it's cheaper too 🙂

EDIT: Someone recommended the Raptor drive to me for its performance. How much faster would it be? I don't think I'll ever fill it up to capacity either. But I wasn't sure, so I tacked on another 7200 RPM drive.

I'd rethink the motherboard, are you going to overclock the CPU? If not then just get an Athlon 64 4000+, it's basically the same CPU with a different name and slightly lower price.

EDIT: 2GB of RAM is a bit overkill as well.

i would ditch that motherboard and go for a msi, asus, or abit mobo. also, if you're gonna spend that much, might as well, get a more decent case...personally, i like lian li's or antec's all aluminum case.

definately ditch that mobo.....from the way I am reading it seems that it has two CPU formats....a 939 and a 754 socket....I believe that I have seen one of these but just get a proper 939 board....any 939 board will do well but I like the look of the MSI Neo2 platinum personally...but it's up to you

If you transfer large files often or do hdd intensive operations where hdd speed is crucial then a raptor would be of a great benefit.

In gaming terms, a Raptor pretty much just speeds up loading times. FPS difference between a Raptor and a usual 7200 rpm hdd is minute at best.
