anything on nvidia side as good as this

after some problems with ati, i decided to try nvidia again. so is there anything on nvidia side as good price/performance wise as this?

ATI has the best card at that price point. The 9800GTX+ was created to compete with the HD4850, buts it's just an overclocked 9800GT (which is very similar to the old 8800GT). The HD4850 and the 9800GTX+ perform about the same (trading blows) but the HD4850 is uses less power (and is lower priced).

I'm in a similar position - just sold my 2900Pro, and was thinking about going NVidia this time (although I had no trouble at all with my 2900Pro). But ATI really has the best card at the ~$120 price range.

well the 8800gt was a great hit a while ago. it was so good that nvidia decided to remake it into the 9800gt, then again into the gtx240(?)

No. The 9800GTX+ is an overclocked version of the 9800GTX. The 9800GTX is based on the 8800 GTS, but has a different PCB, faster ram and better power circuit ( 2X6 pin instead of just one on the GTS). The 8800GTS and the 9800GTX/+, have 128 shader processors, while the 8800GT has 112 shaders.

Also, the 9800GTX+ is the only one out of the three, that has the gpu on 55nm.

So, no, you can't say a 9800gtx+ is just an overclocked 9800GT/8800GT. Is more then that, but it's equal in performance with the 4850 nevertheless.

Although I can't find any recent reviews with those two head to head, from what I know,they were pretty much equal, until 4XAA, then the 4850 was faster at 8X AA, although very few games are playable with such high levels of AA with only 512mb of Vram.
