Here is the deal. I have a machine that is running XP HOME and Mandrake. Is there any utility that will let me access it (XP or Mandrake, doesn't matter which one) remotely from a machine that is running 2K or XP HOME? I looked at gotomypc, but that is like $20 a month.

I use UltraVNC, works great. I support clients in several cities with it, I couldn't live without it. :D

with xp home you can use remote assistance. set up an invite with a very long invite time and you can do it.

can't you ssh into mandrake? or telnet?

There's a free remote desktop client package available for Linux. It'll let you open RDP sessions directly to your XP box, and unlike VNC you won't have to install any additional server daemons (services) on the XP box. Link: Rdesktop.

The opposite direction -- accessing a Linux desktop from XP/2k -- is a bit different. You'll either need to use VNC, or some sort of XWindows software on the PC (i.e. XFree86, Exceed, etc).

The beauty of the VNC flavor of the month is it's cross-platform compatibility. I can deal with Linux or Windows remote boxes from either a Linux or Windows machine. It's also very stable and fast, not to mention free. What's not to like?

I always had problems with VNC implementations on Windows. I tried them all and they were all buggy. Especially when you used the java browser application

for linux access is use shh
for Windows XP is use the rdp client that is shipped with Xp Pro. Works fast and is stable

That's odd, I've been using VNC for over a year, both tightVNC and UltraVNC, never an issue under Windows. I have to say, I have only used the JAVA client a few times, mostly I use the VNC client.

I agree with john. I run VNC servers on all my clients' workstations...probably 500-600 systems...Win9x, NT4, 2000, XP, OS9, OSX, and several Linux flavors. I use it daily and have never had a problem. Of course, I've never had a problem with ssh or RD either...guess I'm lucky. :)

Also agree with John, used VNC (now RealVNC) and ultraVNC, never a real problem. I'm also a big user of RD for XP Pro, again, no problems. UltraVNC is a recommended one for windows, as it has video hooks to improve performance, putting it on par with XPs RD.
