i just bought a scanner machine, and im trying to scan all of my important documents (bills, taxes, receipts) and tag them for easy archival retrieval. i could upload them all to Google Docs and tag there...but is there a way for me to attach tags on my Vista machine?

Tagging files? Wasn't metadata supposed to be part of WinFS, which was originally supposed to ship with Vista? What ever happened to that?

Not sure if you can do it in Vista, OP.

Ew... I would never put my taxes online, even if they claimed it was secure in Google documents.

I'd just stick with some kind of file-hierarchy.

You clearly have no idea what he's talking about.

I thought also that Vista was supposed to do something like this, but I dont know if it ever shipped with that feature. Metadata is so much more useful than directory structures...

vista was late in part because they were trying to build it around the now decade old winfs, they realized they still couldn't get it working back in 2004 and had to scrap a lot of stuff.

i guess they're still working on it but it won't be in windows "7" either (7 sounds more and more like 6.11 every day)

Use LaTex with the PDF package; you can tag it using LaTex and import your scanned PDF to generate the new one. Copy/paste the code and you can put them all in one PDF too if you want.

Oh, MetaData. Whoops, I don't know what I was thinking of, either. (<big yawn>)

I just stick full dates and descriptive names on my files & directories. Use the format 2008.05.31.Name.ext for easy sorting.

It was pulled from Vista because they couldn't get it working in time and Vista was already 3 years late. It'll probably show up in Windows 7 which will be released in 2010.
