Anything I can do to cause minimum wear on my transmission?

You seriously look at the speedometer to shift? If you don't have a tachometer just shift by ear.

I look at the speedometer sometimes, sometimes the tach, sometimes by ear.

Don't bother engine braking. Every time you shift, you put more wear on the transmission, and engine braking doubles the amount of shifting you do. As other people say.. brake pads are cheap.
