First off, we dont have eye insurance, so everytime i go to the doctor its 200 bucks plus contacts for half a year (a little over a 100 for that). well, i really dont have enough time or money to go to the doc, and its been about a year. I know that i should have yearly appts, but since i have no cash or time, its kind of hard for me to go. he REFUSES to write me a prescription for contacts even though my eyes are the same and he knows my problem.

so wtf can i do? ive been wearing these contacts for too long already and cant get anymore anytime soon because hes being a douche.

any ideas atot?

Order online thru 1800contacts, they'll just call your eye doctor to verify your prescription and you're done.

Note, it's against the law for him not to provide your contact lens prescription.

You say he's being a douche, but you realize that he's doing exactly what he is supposed to do, right? Unless he's confident there's no reason to see you again before writing a script, he's supposed to see you before giving you a prescription.

Any way you can use glasses until you save up enough money to go for the next visit?

Only true if the prescription hasn't expired. Pretty sure they expire after 12 months.

Suck it up and go see the doc.

If his prescription was up to date that would be true, but since it's not...

The "use glasses" answer is the obvious one, as it seems you don't have the resources to support your desire for contacts.

Your doctor is doing exactly what any other doctor would do, they aren't going to write you a new prescription without seeing you.

thats what he says, that my prescription is expired. the thing is, he wont even give me a prescription for like, a single box. i just want it for a little while. i told him i dont care if its not perfect ol. so basically im screwed unless i go see him? even if i dont mind having what he thinks MAY not be the right prescription?

thanks guys, thought it would be like this haha

Yes, you are screwed unless you get them from some places that dispenses them without a prescription... The doc is doing exactly what he should be doing... and no, he shouldn't give you a script for 'a single box' or for 'a little while' either. Wear glasses in the meantime, or get a (second?) job to make some cash to pay for what you want to buy.

You might also be able to find a cheaper DR or find a free doc if you really can't afford to see one.

Yup. I used to go to the optometry school at UC Berkeley for cheap appointments. Problem was they ran every test in the book so it took much longer than normal eye appointments.

well its not like i wont go back. the guy knows i like him and think hes a good doc, and my whole fam goes there. its also a time issue...i cant really afford (school and time wise) to drive an hour and a half there and back right now. even a single fucking pair would be great.

thats kinda cool...may order a box or something.

Although I do my best to not support the Evil Empire...try your local Walmart Optician. You should be able to get an exam + a year's worth of contacts for $150 or so. Either that or go to an America's Best or ForEyes (if they have them in your area) for a comparably cheap package. Or go w/ glasses.

Or, best way to get around teh reordering of contacts but needing a valid prescription is to just buy a couple year's worth at a time. If you are confident your eyes won't change, you can buy 2 or 3 years at a time and just stock up.

You really expect your eye-doctor to take on the open-ended liability you (or your family that depends on your income) represent to suing his ass should you actually have a condition or worse a lawyer who is willing to make a case that he was negligent in any possible way?

Think about what you are expecting your doctor to risk (losing medical license and future of lost income) all for your convenience of not planning ahead for an entire freaken year for the eventuallity that you would need cash and time after 12 months to see the doctor again.

Major douchery in my opinion. Now go drive half-blind and kill some innocent 12yr old in the crosswalk going to school.

I think the whole 1-year prescription thing is a scam though. Most people who wear glasses don't get an exam every year. But anyways, $200 sounds high for an exam, I pay $70 and then buy a 6 month supply of contacts right before my prescription expires. That way I only end up getting an exam every 1.5 years.

Why are there required prescriptions for contacts? Is there rampant vision abuse going on in the streets?
