Anything faster soon ?

Honestly, is there going to be anything faster than a GTX260 or a GTX280 *other than the GTX295* before Fall 2009 ?

I have 30 days on my step-up from the card in my sig. I am considering a 55nm260....and maybe trade it off for a HD4870 1GIG or something or maybe just keep it. I don't know yet.

My motherboard is for Crossfire which seems to scale really well with HD4870's. If there isn't anything faster coming out soon from Nvidia...then I might just do that.

Any opinions people ?

I play my games in 1080p on a 40" Samsung.

GTX 285 yo, its on 55nm with higher base clocks and way less power consumption. Its what I'm getting!

From my understanding there will not be a GTX285, there is a 55nm GTX260 which is still called GTX260 and then the GTX295 which is a sandwich card with 2 slightly underclocked GTX260s.

That is the same thing I read cmdrdredd. That is why I am asking though is to be sure.

I am still unsure what to do, because that HD4870 from Newegg for $239 is tempting. But yet again, so is the 55nm GTX260 Core 216 Superclocked from EVGA that I can get for $111.00.

Which should I choose ?

I have a UD3P motherboard, and would love to try out 4870 Crossfire too.

Well, if that is all Nvidia is going to offer most of 2009, then maybe I should just bite and go with HD 4870 1GIG Crossfire.

Choices choices !!

Hmmm....Well, I used to be a BIG ATI fanboy. But then I just loved the performance of the 8800GTS 640 so I purchased one of those. Then I was severely bottlenecked by my AMD3000+ so I traded it off for a 7900GTX. Which with that card, I didn't like the image quality at all. So I traded it off for a HD 3870, which I didnt have very long.

So after that, I bought a Evga 9800GTX which I still have...And is an EXCELLENT card. But I need more performance so I have been deciding on a GTX Core 216 55nm or a HD 4870 1GIG. I have 29 days left in my step-up now. I think I will go with the HD 4870.

Now, just wondering here, but if I would use my step-up for a Brand New GTX260 Core 216 55nm...would there be anyone here that would want to do a even trade for it for a HD 4870 ? But if that were to happen, I would want one with a reference cooler. And would prefer the card to be HIS, Diamond or Visiontek.

Thanks for the posts jaredpace. Is your Crossfire setup the 1 GIG model cards ?

Yea, all the reviews I have seen and read thus far confirm what you said about it being a nice setup. :p And it seems to scale quite a bit better than past ATI cards in Crossfire.

The resolution I play at is 1920x1080 and while the 9800GTX I have does *ok* I still need more performance. Because I will be having a Quad 9550 coming here shortly in about two weeks as well.

Going for anything over a GTX 260/4870 is kinda pointless considering you'll be gaming on 1920*1080, if you really need it, go for a 4850x2 or a GTX 280

If they follow their roadmaps, that won't be until between June and August 2009. Too far out for the OP's time table.

Yea, I do agree with Bateluer, however....One would think that HD 4870 Crossfire would totally outperform a single R800 card. Or would it ? Since we know nothing about it yet

But yes, that is why out of my timetable, only have *29* days left for step-up which is right around a month...and actually, I have less than 29 days to step-up because I would have to ship the card to them. So its more than likely like I have 20 days left or so to decide what I wanna do.

But I think I made my mind up. Step-up and trade the card off for a HD 4870 then pick up another one for Crossfire.

I could basically get HD 4870 1GIG Crossfire for $302.00.

Does this sound like a good idea ?

EDIT: Some may argue that I dont need more than a 9800GTX with my E7200, but I tell you what, at 3.8Ghz this CPU really screams.

You probably mean a single Rv870 (or HD 5870).
IMO - RV870 will be 1.2 to 1.25 times faster than RV770, or about the speed of a GTX280OC. HD4870 (RV770) Crossfire is an average of 1.6 to 1.7 times faster than a single RV770.

It should look something like this:
EXAMPLE GAME "X" Average Resolution "X"
GPU(s)------------Framerate
Rv770 (4850)-------32 FPS
2 x Rv770 (4850's) ~53 FPS
Rv770 (4870)-------40 FPS
2 x Rv770 (R700)--~66 FPS
Rv870 (5870)-------50 FPS
2 x Rv870 (R800)--~83 FPS

GTX280 65nm -----~50 FPS
2 x GTX280 65nm -~83 FPS

Give or take. Just my guess.

Well, if you would have read my posts above :p....you would see that my Gigabyte board supports Crossfire. And I would probably like to give HD 4870 Crossfire a go. And trading the Core 216 for a HD 4870 would mean I can get the first HD 4870 for $111 or so. Then around $200 for the other one.

I wonder who would argue that... My CPU is much slower than yours, but I'm not planning to upgrade it any time soon... Unless I'll want to do more than just play games and surf the net that is. ;)

From what I've been reading, I actually think the 40nm GT212 is nothing more than a mainstream GT200 class card, of lower caliber than the GTX 260 and 280. I don't think a true high end card will hit the market until the GT300 paves way at the end of 2009.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong however.
