anything fancy needed for an e8500?

I have an e85000 and Asus p5q mother board on the way..

I assume the heat sink comes with a thermal pad, and that's all I need to do if I'm running stock speeds. Good enough, or do I need to replace with some fancy paste?

If I decide later to overclock, then do I just up the speed, watch the temps, and come back here to see what extra cooling I need?

Mostly curious about what to do to get me up and running safely.

If it's the boxed/retail version, then it comes with a heatsink. If OEM/tray version, you'll need to buy one.

Stock heatsink/paste is fine for stock speeds, as long as there's decent airflow in your case.

We'll help you come over to the dark side anytime.

Yes, boxed and retail. So these come with a thermal pad, and I *don't* want to remove that and put on silver fancy paste.
When I go a little to the dark, it'll prob still be ok, and will be able to tell by temperature, but when I really want to o/c, then I'll need to pull the heatsink off, apply fancy silver paste, and maybe some new cooler to not blow my head up.

Have not done a new build in 5+ years, so want to be sure I'm understanding it all 100%.

Is there any logic in removing that thermal pad right away, and starting life off with silver paste?

Yes sir. Just like the others has stated, if you only plan on running it at stock speeds and never overclocking, then the stock heatsink with the preapplied thermal paste is perfectly fine.

Once my after market sink arrives tomorrow...I will finally move away from the stock Intel sink.

With the stock sink, my E7200 runs 34c idle and 51c load. So yea, you will be fine for stock speeds.

You wont need to remove the pad, just fasten down the sink, turn the push pins and your done😛

For stock speeds there is nothing else you should do, but.....I'd buy a TRUE and overclock it to at least 4.5 ghz. But, well, that's just me. 😉

Other than a sense of accomplishment, no.

Sounds like you know what's up.
