Time to trash the SBLive! I'm getting fed up with lack of support from Creative. I'm probably going to get the Hercules Game Theatre XP, unless there is something better.
So, is there anything better then the Hercules Game Theatre XP?
And yes I already searched the forums.
Thanks,

I don't know if there is anything "better", but the Philips Acoustic Edge and the Santa Cruz are both very good cards too. But they don't have all the features and stuff of the Hercules.

What operating system are you going to be running under?

The Hercules Game Theatre XP (Good under both Win9x Win2k) offers the most amount of connections and versatility compared to the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (Good under both Win9x Win2k) or the Philips Acoustic Edge (Good under Win9x bad under Win2k).

If you want the breakout box, and you are okay with the higher price, then get the Herc.
If you don't care for the breakout box, or want to save $50, then get the Santa Cruz.

I'm running Win2K, eventually XP.
What about high-end cards in the range of $200-$500?

Will this be mainly for gaming or do you watch a lot of dvds?

If you plan on watching dvds via your computer, you can get a 5.1 card and pipe the sound from an m-audio card to your receiver. Take a look over at Digital Connection. Note the m-audio card is tops for movies, but not for gaming.

The m-audio should be capable of playing dvd-audio discs if that's your thing. But you'd still want to end up getting a separate sound card for games. May not be worth it for you.

But for movies, it comes highly recommended by "those in the know". (and no, I'm not one of those forunate enough to own one of these)

I agree with you in regards to Creative. Their day in the sun is over. Time for someone to replace them as the new sound card standard.

XP all the way, best card I have ever owned, not to mention the awesome breakout box. I can't believ they haven't put creative out of the sound card buisness already.

No! GTXP is the BEST sound card you can ever get! (OK, at least right now, not counting professional cards :))

I've had a Live! Value, Phillips Acoustic Edge, and an XP.

I'm using the XP because its got the best win2k support. Plus I love the breakout box. The AE has major driver problems that haven't been resolved almost 6 months after the card's release. Thats ridiculous. The Live! just has poor sound quality compared to both the XP and AE.

Another vote for the XP.

Well, here's a sound card that someone had mentioned to me.
It's made by a company called TerraTec, the name of it is SixPack 5.1+
Overview
Details
What do you think?

Thanks,

the sixpack looks like a good card...never heard of it...wonder if it's using the CS chipset...

anyway, as far as most consumer cards go, the herc is among the best, especially if u wanna make use of all the exta connectors on the breakout box, or simply like the look of it.
