I'm still fairly new to the corporate world... in my previous internships, they never expected much out of me so I enjoyed doing my own work inside my cubicle and still ended up with full time offers from both internships.

Here at my full time job, I started with one other guy just out of college like me and he seemed to have picked up things much faster. So even though we both started at the same time, people go to him for questions and pull him into meetings instead of me. Personally, I hate meetings and I really don't mind it at all but I feel like I'm doing just enough to get by. What's your perspective?

You are getting paid to do your job. Period. Give it your all without going to far, I have been brought up by the saying "give 8 hours work for 8 hours pay". No less and no more.

Nothing wrong with giving 8 hours work for 8 hours pay, but just realize that you'll probably always be stuck in your entry-level position if you only give minimal effort. You'll see people get hired after you get promoted before you. If you're cool with that, then more power to ya.

Giving 8 hours work for the pay means one hell of a lot more than just getting by, BTW.

Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

OP - spend less time here posting about how to get pussy and you might be able to successful in at least one endeavor.

You're also a consultant who's supposed to be paid for performance. You can get by in a regular corporate job but not in consulting. I doubt you'll be employed for long.

Work isn't important in life, work is what gets in the way of what's important in life. Fuck the job, it's only a way to get enough money and insurance to do what you really need to.

Unless you're bright enough to work at what you're interested in and care about.

I don't have a problem with the "8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay" attitude, as long as you WORK during that 8 hours.

I've almost always been an hourly employee, and even when I worked for one of the local public utilities, I never could develop the "I get paid by the hour," kind of attitude that's so prevalent in those kinds of jobs.
When I'm on the clock, I do my best to "give 110%." Sure, sometimes things are slow, but instead of just fucking off and drawing my pay, I always found SOMETHING that needed doing; oil changes, lubrication, other maintenance on cranes, heavy equipment, barges, whatever. The crews I worked with didn't always like that I insisted we stay busy, and of course, the crews that weren't under my direct supervision did pretty much as they pleased, but never my crews. We were there to work, and by damn, we WORKED....Granted, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so sometimes we had to sweat and toil at catching a few fish, sometimes we chipped rust and painted, sometimes we busted our asses doing oil changes and maintenance, other times, (if EVERYTHING else was done and the weather was shitty) we slaved over a microwave & BBQ and we ate, watched a bit of T.V., or played cards...but we stayed busy. :D
NO ONE was ever allowed to do "only the minimum needed to not get fired." When someone tried that, they either got their shit together, or got transferred to another part of the job...where hopefully, the work was so shitty/strenuous that they'd quit.

I was vastly confused for a second because he didn't have the hippie avatar. And I totally agree, BoomerD. Even if you suck at your job (I sucked at my first job), always work when you're being paid to do so. After getting in trouble enough for either slacking off or just doing plain stupid shit when I knew I shouldn't have, I've developed a semi-decent work ethic: work when you're being paid/when you're in class, and have fun when you're not.

Someone has to be below average. Just remember that your real job is making others look good.

i get paid a lot more than i think i should to but i dont work at all. i just do enough to not get fired.

i know im a bad person. but i lost motivation to work hard a few years ago when i worked my ass off and didnt get promotion, a raise, or even recognized (actually i was told by my boss's boss that my performance rating had to be moved DOWN a notch because the salary increase i was getting was not consistent with my high rating (exceeding expectations to meeting expectations) on my performance review for HR purposes.)

at that point i've had it and moved on to consulting, been making a hell of a lot more money (like 3-fold) and became a hell of a lot lazier (work 1/3 as much as i used to probably).

once upon a time, i worked like a freak, and excelled at my profession. after 2 months in the field, i was training others. i was promoted to a job normally requiring 5 - 10 years experience, in a year and a half. i soon excelled at my new job, and started wearing many, many hats. unfortunately for me, the one hat i don't wear is ass-kissing yes man. despite busting my ass, and making my company a lot of money for a short paycheck, i am doomed. once it became clear that (at my company at least) it's not what you know, it's who you blow, i have endeavored to be the biggest milker they have ever seen. i'll continue to slack there until i land at a new outfit that rewards talent and effort. i've decide compromise my principles, and kiss some ass when needed.
