I have an opportunity to get a job in IT asset Management, I have done some research, but I would like to hear from those that are actually doing the job.

Sounds like a horribly boring job. Depending on the company, it may be a good way to get your foot in the door and move onto a better job ASAP.

sounds like one of those jobs where you poke at things with the back of your ballpoint pen, and are always seen moving stuff around on carts.

I was offered a position in IT asset management but turned it down. Attributes of the role included:
- Complete ownership over the revision of the asset management process
- Third party tool selection and implementation to manage asset management
- Integration between multiple existing data systems related to asset management
- Working with data center asset management to determine provisioning processes and priority for servers
- Asset transfer between subsidiaries and asset sale to other entities

Those things alone would make it a non-boring job. It was fairly high level, approximately 6 figures. There's a lot to corporate asset management so if you're at a big company this could be a very challenging and profitable job.

[edit] Oh, and there was no actual handling of physical equipment.

our asset manager meets with the fedex and ups guy every day, logs name/specs/serial number of stuff we buy into our mgmt system and gives it to the division that paid for it, then once / year does an inventory.

I think he makes about 30K/yr

I am an IT Asset Manager for a software company that employs ~5K with Gross Sales ~1B (Billion), I have a staff of five, six figure income, bonus, & stock options. Ive been doing IT Asset Management for ~15 years so don't let anyone tell you its boring... We use HP's Asset Manager software that cost ~300K for the suite and discovery tools. If you like solving problems, doing research, monitoring ROI, and generally providing your company visibility into the 'what do we own' and 'how can we save money?' then you may like this career. In addition, its a niche role where you don't compete against a dozen others in a single organization. Do your own research, check out job boards for descriptions, duty's and salary's. The right job in this field can be very rewarding, or... you could be dude waiting for FedEx...

I'm interning at a IT consulting company specializing in capital markets. I'm specifically working in the wealth and asset management sales divison. Seems like interesting stuff, but nothing I'd want to do for the rest of my life.
