I was wondering if your phone connection is always connected to the phone company? We're fixing to move into an apartment and I don't have an account with the phone company. The problem with Vonage though is that the phone has to be connected directly to the router. If the phone connection is not hooked up, I could just plug in a cable from the router to the phone jack, and then connect my phone to any other jack in the house. But if I try to make a call, will the phone company try to make the call for me, even though I don't have an account, or will Vonage take over? I'm pretty sure it won't work, but I just wanted to check and see if someone knew for sure.

If you're using Vonage software/hardware then I'm pretty sure that Vonage will make the call.

If it doesn't work, just find the box and unhook the 2 or 4 wires for your apartment but that might not be easy.

Most of the time, yes - the wires are always there, but your port at the CO or RT has been disabled (or at least that's the way it is around here). You'd probably want to disconnect your apartment's telephone line(s) from the telephone company's demarcation point before connecting your Vonage equipment to the apartment wiring. If the wiring were to be reconnected, then your equipment might be toast.

Good to know. I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. I doubt all the jacks have cables that run all the way down to the main connection anyway. They most likely just daisy-chain, so if I can find the first one, I can just unhook the wires there and I don't have to mess with the main box. I'll give it a try and let y'all know how it works.
