Many couldn't get 1 gig Duron to run on plain K7T Turbo, and wondering if any had luck with 1.2 Duron? Your bios#? Thanks for any input.

I never had any problem with a 1gig duron on my k7t turbo board. Just update the bios to the newest one.

Its not rocket science.

Thanks IW. I know, I know, I need to learn that simple flashing. Never really needed to so far, and thought Live Bios on Turbo might be good, til I heard too many bad stories.

All these current price changes have me thinking of too many chips at once. Are you still running the 1.33/266? Tbird? I think of that unlocked chip to get access to multipliers, and then the naysayers remind me of all the heat (and , of course, the beginning of summer isn't helping). Curious what kind of temps you get (recall you aren't o/ced), HS&F type?

To further complicate matters, I've just come into a dirt cheap new Turbo2, and trying to decide whether to sell it and continue w/this Turbo since it runs so well. Plain Turbo goes to 1800XP, and 2 model to 2100. My guess is MSI is more likely to extend bios for Tbred on 2 model, and maybe leave the older model where it is. Probably will keep the 2, and sell this one once I decide if the current chips are priced well enough to make a jump. All this as if I didn't have enough to think about. Excuse me for thinking in print.

Good memory! Yes, I am still using the 1.3 Tbird. My temps are reasonable because I have decent airflow in my case. CPU 37-39C and system 25-29C. I run a massive Cidicom made by Spire. Super Rock I believe it is called.

I believe both boards use the same bios. Rumours say that the T2 bios will work on the Turbo 1.

Maybe you could try making a router or server using the Turbo 1. Play around with networking for the sake of learning. There are lots of possibilities that you could explore.

Thanks again (sorry for later reply, many home projects prevailing). From my search, your Big Rock cooler seems much like the Coolermaster ( DP5-7H53F) I'm using. Big sink, 70x70 4300RPM fan and 37.5 CFM for mine. Your temps certainly look reasonable to me! Guess the moral is simple. Get a good chip, don't push it, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Yes, I've heard the bioses are the same for the Turbos, tho I don't recognize the T2 designation you used. My plain Turbo has v3.1 - 10/25/01. My new Turbo2 has a Phoenix bios chip which is said to be the same as Award now (since merger), and imagine it is v3.4. TBD soon.

Good idea re practicing networking, but if I do so may do with my K6 III 333@427 back-up rig.

My Duron 950 will hold me nicely while this years' chip price war prevails. The Duron 1.2 @ $49 is tempting, but I am trying to hold out for the extra cache.

I'm sure sold on the MSI MBs. I haven't had a single problem so far. The Turbo2 should hold me easily till Hammer MBs matures and drops in price. Hammer speculation is getting tiresome, and I hope AMD really nails it!

EDIT: How many case fans are you running?

I am a firm believer in great case air flow for keeping temps under control. I use 2 case fans and a case that flows a lot of air. Also if you are running win98 iI would recommend getting CPUidle. I use winXP and CPUidle has an issue with my sound drivers. Nothing too serious but annoying nonetheless.

I use T2 instead of Turbo2.

I think that the best bang for the buck right now would be a slower XP cpu. Since I live in Canada, what I consider a reasonable price may not seem too reasonable to someone in the states. I can get an 1800+ for less than $190 cdn and the 1.2 duron for $91 cdn.

I use 3 PCs now for network experiments. I am now trying to setup a linux web/file server for both my intranet and the internet. You just can't learn this stuff at school. Nothing beats learning from experience!

Good luck with those boards.:)

I now understand your use of T2 (I often read and write early in the morning, so my readers have to beware).

Yes, the XP1500-1700s are getting into range, and probably in my socket soon.

I've been on a "quiet" kick lately, and have no case fans running, side off case and very pleasant. We hit 79F today, about 69F in my well insulated old house, and I'm running 38-42C on the Duron. I'm sure I'll have to kick in the fans as sumer progresses.

And luck to you too on your experiments, and we'll catch up again later. Cheers

Appreciated this thread since I just ordered a retail Athlon XP 1700+ for my MSI K7T Turbo (older version, green PCB). According to MSI, the board should support up to a XP 1800+. Any idea if I will have to upgrade the BIOS? I haven't flashed a BIOS yet, and am somewhat intimidated by the process, being "non DOS friendly". A more experienced friend is supposed to come over and help me flash my old MSI-6309 so that it will properly recognize the Celeron 900 processor in it and quit calling it a PIII 850 on boot up!

I figure if I am going to toast a board with a bad flash, it should be my oldest one! (And of course, that would expedite that KT3 Ultra I have had my eye on...) Anyway, if anyone knows if the older BIOS will properly recognize the XP, or at least call it an athlon 1.47, let me know. Thanks in advance.
