Anyone with GPU with 2GB VRAM and 4 or more displays?

Heya,

I'm looking to see if anyone out there has a GPU(s) running 2GB VRAM instead of the standard 1GB VRAM and also using 4 or more displays. I currently have an HD5850 with three 1080p LCD's attached, and a larger 4th 1080p LCD attached the motherboard's GPU (HD4200). Many times during things like video play back (Netflix, DVD's through VLC and Media Player) and other things like Pandora or various websites that are heavy on java/flash, seem to cause my theme in Windows 7 x64 to switch to `basic' and remove aero. It's very annoying. I check my resource manager and monitor it for when this happens and my system RAM is not being used hardly to the fullest (8GB, using like 2 something during all this use). CPU is a 4.0Ghz quad. So the last culprit is VRAM on the video card not able to manage all the desktop stuff in such a small amount. So I'm looking to see if anyone out there with a GPU setup with 2GB VRAM ever experiences this? I'd love to find a way to prevent this from happening and if it's a hardware thing due to too little VRAM, I'd get a 2GB VRAM GPU in here pronto.

Any suggestions?

Very best,

I don't think this is a HW issue. I have the same problem with my 5870 and 2 monitors on Win 7 HP 64 bit. It just randomly kills glass, crashes video drivers, etc, etc. And yes - i know it's time to reinstall - will be doing that shortly 🙂

The only time I don't have any issues is when I'm gaming.
That's why I game a lot 😀

2gb makes a big difference-I only game at 1920/1200 but with Arma 2 and settings pretty high i noticed a massive difference going from 3gb vram (5870 trifire) to 8gb (6990 xfire). I was amazed by how much faster everything is from menu loading to fast pans in game to detail and resolution and general texture desnsity.

I've seen the GTX 560ti 2gb cards go for $200 recently. A pair of them in SLI would be very powerful and would do what you're trying to do, OP.

Sometimes Win7 does that for no good reason at all. I built a file server, and I put a test install of Win7 on it for a few days, and it has an ATI X1300 PCI-E card in it.

Win7 installed it's own drivers for that card, it is supported out of the box, so I got Aero and native 1920x1200 resolution with that card.

But while it was just sitting there, not running any programs, suddenly it shifted to Basic theme. After a few minutes, Aero came back. Wierdest thing. I have no explanation why.

Try disabling the "hardware acceleration" in flash.

My system used to completly freez up on youtube (its player is flash based). even with 8GB of video ram and 12gb of system ram.
