I support quite a few people with laptops, and I find myself wasting an immense amount of time backing up data through USB 1.1 connections. I've looked into USB 2.0/Firewire Cardbus adapters as one option, but in doing a little research I've come across a SATA Cardbus adapter, with considerably more bandwidth than USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and even 800.
That said, the ultimate bottleneck will be the laptop hard drive itself, but I'm not certain as I don't have first hand experience.
