Have been told VPN is the way to go.....

Anyone have any first hand experience and tiips on how to go about doing it?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi all,

I'm guessing that someone on this forum will be able to answer this question.
I'm not into networking in the least and need some guidance.

The company I work for has 2 locations and the boss is wanting for our
sister store 35 miles away to be able to acess our business database
and run invoices and check inventory etc......

He would like to do this through the internet instead of using a dedicated dial up line.

We have DSL internet service in both locations.

The "server" machine that has the database program on it here is running
Windows 2000 advanced server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Shouldn't be too much of a problem. You want something called "VPN", wich stands for Virtual Private Network. It's was made exactly for what you want to do. To keep things clean and secure, you'll need two routers (one at each end) with VPN features (IPSec tunnels, etc.). Also, static IPs on both locations.

There are lots of tutorials out there, I'm not sure wich one to recommend. I believe someone here will be able to explain to you how to make it work. 😉

Thanks for the tip....I was hoping someone would reply who has used VPN
and give me a good "first person experience and tips" on it.

How about it? Anyone use VPN that can post or PM me about it?

Thanks,
Jim

Well if your sister store also has a windows 2000 server you can use RRAS to create a VPN connection between the two. But if you are willing to spend more money for VPN hardware/alias firewall, you can create site to site VPN connections. I would recomend getting a device from a reputable manufacture, because your business will somewhat depend on them. Cisco, Sonicwall, Netscreen, etc. I would go with Sonicwall because it is the easiest to setup.

Everyone here is right. Your decision will be which product to go with. I have set up mostly firewall based VPN's from Checkpoint, expensive and can be difficult but work well when complete, to watchguard fireboxes, not too costly and pretty easy to setup. I haven't any experience with netscreen but I hear they are nice to work with and fast.

The biggest issue I see in your question is the database itself. I would guess that you will want to use something that won't slow down your performance of that. You are also using DSL so maybe that isn't a consideration after all. 😀

I don't think the program we are running is going to be a problem because probably no more
than 3 people will ever actually be doing anything "live" with it at any one time.

Our "computer guy" is playing with vpn now and seeing if he can make it work properly.

Thanks,
Jim
