My KDS VS-21 just made some smoke :(

Here are some pictures of what I think is the source of the smoke (the monitor is not working anymore)

Dead Resistor?

My question is : Is it possible that a resistor can go bad like that?? And if yes, is it risky to replace the resistor with a new one (identical) ?

You can probably replace the resistor, but it would be nice to know what made it blow. You may be treating the results, but not the problem. Everything I have read says you can get a very nasty shock by poking around inside a monitor without knowing what you are doing, there are some big capacitors inside that will hold a charge until you or a miss-placed screwdriver touches the wrong thing and then ZAP! I would say go shopping this afternoon for a new monitor, unless the KDS is still under warranty, or send them the photos and complain anyway, they might just comp you a new one.

A resistor won't fail catastrophically like that unless another component has failed first.

The most likely thing is that one of those transistors mounted to those heatsinks has failed short circuit. Tracing the fault requires knowledge of monitor circuits and experience in electronic faultfinding.

Best to leave it to someone who does this routinely - let them take the risks of working with a CRT. 30,000 volt circuits, big mains voltage capacitors, and a vacuum filled glass tube with a surprisingly fragile neck - no thanks.

Ok thanks for the answers, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I'll wrap it up and bring it to a local KDS service center.
