I'm wondering if it will be worth it to upgrade to one a 5870 or GTX even though I'm on Core 2 system. I mainly play Supcom 1 and a couple other games. I'm wondering if I should hold off upgrading till christmas/early next year.

And if anyone plays supcom 1, can anyone post the FPS #'s (min, max, avg) of supcom @ 1280x1024?

Thats the main resolution I play at on this monitor until I get a new nne.

What are you using now that is not enough for 1280x1024? A 5870 or gtx480 is a major overkill for that rez.

supcom 1 is not new and you really don't need those types of heavy guns for it. Hold off a bit if you can assuming you ain't playing in slideshow mode.

if your monitor is 1280x1024 then it sounds like you need a modern widescreen before spending 400-500 bucks on a gpu. at 1280 a 5870/gtx480 would be laughably wasteful and even more so if you factor in your cpu.

Supcom 1 may not be new but it is a massive perf hog, my min fps is like 10, my avg is like 39.

what are you sighing about? check your own link at the cpu results. if you have core 2 duo then you would be foolish to get a 5870/gtx480 at 1280.

Note that all those benchmarks are at widescreen resolutions, they never tested anything beneath 1680x1050. I'm wondering what the perf diff would be between my 8800 GTS @ 1280x1024 with say a GTX 480 or HD5870

Yes, yes it is worth it.

The 480 is an awesome card.

Edit: Depending on resolution.

at just 1280 you would be wasting even more of what a card like the 5870/gtx480 can do.

come on now read the thread. he says 1280 and he is talking about running the fastest single gpus out there on a core 2 duo. not to mention the game he is talking about would really make those gpus a waste with his cpu.

260/470 would be all you ever need.

If you need DX11 then a cut-down Fermi or a 5770.
