Supposed to be delivered to me today. Was wondering if anyone else has one and how well or poorly they are over clocking?
 
Well just by the little bit that has been said about the i7 it seems the "L4" batches tend to do better than the L3. The i5 I received is an "L4" so I hope its decent enough to hit 4.5ghz with reasonable volts/temp under a swiftech h220 loop.

Got a few 34xxx 4770Ks to play with recently. One was OK with great TIM, one was excellent with bad TIM, the other was horrible (1.3V for 4.2GHz, and forget about running Prime95 28.5 on it 😵 )

Noticed you're in IA. Des Moines, Ankeny, Ames? I actually drove up to MN once to pickup a bunch of i7 920 combos 🙂

I think you can say that about the entire state 😛
Compared to Dallas (4x Frys, 1x MicroCenter), I do not miss that aspect of Iowa much.
 
I got one and haven't worked on OC'ing yet, but I am very impressed with temperatures.

Seems to be topping out at <65 under full load, just under 1.1v from cpuid. This is with an Artic Freezer 13 CPU Cooler. Decent but not great air cooler.


Does 595 in Cinbench 15. Bone stock.

It looks like all 4 cores turbo to 3.9ghz on the 4690k. I'm using latest bios on MSI z87-G45

Will be looking for 4.4ghz once I overclock. I think there is high probability of that. 4.6ghz appears AFAIK to require quite a bit of voltage on these.[/

So a bit of light overclocking and I'm having success at 4.4ghz on the 4690k by adjusting just two settings in bios.

CPU Ratio: 44x
Vcore: 1.200v

The auto settings puts CPU VRIN to 1.8v and CPU Ring to 1.2v which looks fine for this OC.

The uncore frequency gets auto'd to 3900mhz when I change CPU ratio to 44x.

The OC now gets 660 in Cinebench R15 so nice 10% improvement for minimal trouble.

4.6ghz was a no go on 1.25v.
 
Not bad at all. All I hope for is 4.5Ghz at a reasonable voltage and temp. Only problem I have right now is waiting for a bracket to mount my swiftech h220 to the board...its been out of stock for the past two-three weeks.

Did you get an L4 batch chip or L3?
 
My previous 2500k did 4.5ghz at 1.328v, 4.6 at 1.375v and 4.7 at 1.425v,
current 3570k does 4.6ghz at 1.330v, 4.7ghz at 1.38v. Hopefully my new up coming (arrive next Monday 7/7) haswell 4690k will do 4.6ghz at 1.3v or less.
 
Looks like it was too quick and dirty on my OC. Not stable 4.4@1.2v. Since i'm in HTPC i'm going to start working on stablizing around 4200mhz to avoid heat problems.

From reading around it looks to me like if you're willing to put ~1.3v to it that 4.6ghz is guarunteed. Some folks are able to do it with a lot less volts.

I'm not sure if I'm L3 or L4, didn't look before install and not seeing a indication in CPUID.

L3 or L4 is the first two characters of batch number on the CPU's box.

It could even be that you're relatively "new" to OC enthusiasm -- I couldn't say. I don't find any reason to think it -- either way.

But the info on this first batch of i7-4790K chips is starting to coalesce around a fuzzy view of it.

Some guy posted his thread on his entire 4790K project of things he didn't even hesitate to do from the start: among other things, he delidded it; he replaced the "new" polymer-TIM with CLU, and I don't even think he thought to get a bench basemark with the factory TIM. He deployed what seemed to be a rather refined custom water loop.

He was able to try settings toward 5GHz. But (my recollection) he topped out at about 4.8Ghz. At that point, he was pushing the voltage toward 1.45V, and the load temperature was about 69C.

So if Intel promoted the chip with info about "additional capacitors, [etc.]" enabling better OCs, they balanced their warranty-cost-benefits and reputation against increasing the base clock speed by 500 Mhz with the same Turbo spread to about 400Ghz above that.

I'm more inclined to guess that they OC'd and binned their own processors -- a continuation of Haswell.

Given that this is a "haswell-refresh," we could speculate over what's in store with the "E" release. Since Intel disciplines its pricing with ease because it is something like a duopoly, dominant firm or similar company, they'd have no reason to jettison the indium-solder fabrication process to shave a few pennies off Haswell "E" prices.

I wouldn't have expected any earthshattering breakthrough with Haswell-E, either. It just continues in my "promising project" inventory at the moment, with the trust that Intel will continue to use indium-solder as they had for SB-E and IB-E before.
 
My justification for getting 4690k over 4670k was for ten dollars more you get TSX-NI and VT-d enabled on the 4690k (also on 4790k.) That has to be worth ten dollars.
 
Just curious what do you guys think of the i5-4690k vs the older Sandy Bridge i7-2600k? Comparing the two because both are somewhat similar in price point when you account for the FS/FT thread at just about any tech site.

I'd go after the 4690K, if only because overclocks degrade over time.
 
If I had a 2600K setup currently I probably wouldn't bother "upgrading" to a 4690K unless there was some specific feature I needed from the newer chipses and/or wanted TSX-NI and VT-d.

I came from an FX-8320 setup (soon to be retired)....the motherboard was an older GA-990X and lacked numerous features that the newer chipets/boards have. So I went ahead with the 4690K and a Asrock Z97 extreme6.

Depends on what your budget was, but I would probably go with a Z97/4690K vs buying used 2600K and 1155 motherboard. I believe the hotdeals section had some nice combo buys at newegg for the 4690K.
 
^Just exactly that. I notice the 4690k deal from Newegg but also realize that used 2600k can be had for the same price or less. Old motherboards for the 2600k can also be found for cheap. In the end, the newer Z97 combo deal seems like a better deal overall.
 
Just got my 4690k and asrock z97 extreme4 board today, L418C194, hopefully I can at least hit 4.6ghz with less than 1.3v. Finger crossed.
