I will be moving to the DFW area soon, and I was wondering how the daily commute is. Last time I was there, it did not seem that bad.

Where are you moving to?
IF you're moving into the far north - farther north than Richardson - God help you on your morning commute.

If you're taking US 75 into work, and are coming in from North of 635, you are looking at probably 45 minutes each way - http://www.dallashighfive.org/

If youare taking the Dallas North Tollway into downtown, it's not too bad, it's just about 15-20 mph the whole way in from Plano through 635 and into Northwest Highway, but in a few weeks they're going to begin the contrustion of adding another through lane on Tollway Southbound. Northbound is already 3 lanes start-to-end which is good.

If you're coming in from the south I35E, you're probably fine. I can't tell you if you are coming in from I35E southboard. Similarily, someone else will have to help you if you're coming in from Fort Worth or on 635. George Bush (aka 190) is usually really fast, but it runs really far to the north of I635 and doesn't give you a direct connection to most of the business districts.

There's always the Light Rail, which is typically used to connect you from a Park-and-Ride Station to Downtown, and if you have the option it will almost always be faster and cheaper than commuting via car. But it's only beneficial if you live in North Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Frisco, or Garland.

The problem with commuting via US75 now is that, well, a lot of the ramps from 635 to 75 lanes are open, which means traffic just POURS into the two US75 lanes at that interchange. US75 is already 4 lanes wide from Downtown to Frisco, except it goes down to 2 lanes right there at 635 at the exact same point in time as traffic is pouring onto it from 635. It's an absolute nightmare.

North Richland Hills puts you pretty much in the smack of everything. I wouldn't worry, I would imagine you're not more than 30 minutes from anything big.

An oldie but goodie for you:
Driving in Dallas

Learn to pronounce the city name....
Dal-lus or Daa-lis (depends if ya live inside or outside LBJ Freeway)

Forget all traffic rules or laws you learned elsewhere...
Dallas has its own version of traffic rules

There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Dallas...
We all drive like that

All directions start with, "Get on Beltline"...
This is a road which has no beginning and no end

The morning rush hour...
Is from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

The evening rush hour...
Is from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Except on any given Friday...
Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning

If you should actually stop at a yellow light...
You will be rear ended, cussed out and probably shot

When you're first in line, count to five when a light turns green...
This avoids crashing into the drivers running the red light

Construction on the Central Expressway is a way of life...
Natives consider it a permanent form of entertainment

This also now applies to two other roads...
The George Bush Freeway (aka 190) and Jupiter Road

All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase...
"Oh, we're in Fort Worth !!"

If someone actually has their turn signal on...
Assume it to be a factory defect

Watch out for all old ladies with blue hair in Mercedes...
They always have the right of way

Inwood Road, Plano Road, NW Highway, & hundreds more...
All mysteriously change names as you cross intersections

Any trip across town (east to west) at any time...
Will always take a minimum of four hours

Freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75
The minimum acceptable speed on the Dallas North Toll Road is 85

You can drive West in the North-bound lane of East NothWest highway....
Don't let this confuse you

Some Toll roads have special qualtities...
The North Dallas Tollway is our version of a NASCAR circuit

The LBJ Freeway is called "The Death Trap" for two reasons...
"Deaths" and "Traps"

If it's 100 degrees...
Assume Fall must start next weekend

If it's 10 degrees and sleeting or snowing...
Assume the Fort Worth Stock Show is in progress

If it's rained 6 inches in the last hour...
You are at or near a Golf Classic in the second round

All Amusement Parks, Stadiums, Arenas, Race tracks & Airports...
Are conveniently located as far away from everything as possible

All Rangers games in Arlington are scheduled to impede rush hour...
This successfully delays regular commuter traffic by about 2 hours

If you ask directions, get ALL the names of the streets...
Dallas natives intermix numbers, letters, & names for the same roads

If your Map is more than a few weeks old...
Throw it away and buy a new one

Great post beer.

You need something about Ft. Worth drivers though, I get over there & have the crap scared out of me frequently, and I'm accustomed to Dallas driving:Q

beer,

Very nice post and some are amazingly accurate ala "Some Toll roads have special qualtities...
The North Dallas Tollway is our version of a NASCAR circuit." That's SO very true.

Pliablemoose,

Isn't it odd how different it is in Dallas vs. Ft. Worth? I hated driving to Dallas every day at my last job...

Yep, it literally blows me away...

Prob because I'm less familiar with the exits, etc, but it seems as though Ft. Worth drivers use their turn signals less, are a bit less considerate & drive faster on the major roads:(

(BTW, I'm the guy that slows down & tries to let people merge from the on ramps:D-seems like I'm the only person some days)

I live in NRH and work in Coppell. I take mostly back roads and the commute isn't bad at all. Usually takes me about 30 minutes. It really depends on where you will be commuting to and what time you'll be hitting the road. Do you know where you'll be working and what your hours will be? You can PM me if you want.

I'm not even going to mention the race & sex of the drivers that run me off the road when I'm trying to merge onto the freeway....
:|

Or the ones that speed up or slow down alongside me when I'm trying to change lanes:disgust:

DFW is a big area. Whereabouts are you commuting? Rush hour is pretty bad here. I only have to deal with a small leg of it (southbound 75 almost to 635) and it can be horrendous. I just get to work at 9:30-10:00 and leave after 6:30 or so and rarely have any problems..

Thank GOD I get to return to Austin this Saturday. Traffic sucks, but instead of commuting 25 miles from suburbs, I basically live within a five mile stretch on 35 - it's one thing to be going 20 mph for 5 miles, another to be doing it for 25 :p

Heh, cKGunslinger is totally correct. Driving times can vary a lot up to 1 hr 30 min. (N. Dallas to Ft. Worth during rush hour). I however live in Ft. Worth, work in downtown Ft. Worth and it only takes me ~10 minutes to get there. :D

I live in Plano, and I commute to Downtown every morning. It's total hell. Not so bad in the morning since I leave relatively late. On the way back it's horrible. It averages about 1 hour drive time for the 20 mile trip. Slows down before 635, George Bush, and again in North Plano, it get's really frustrating. So I just stay at my gf's apartment off Henderson until around 7 now :p

Another thing to add to beer's list: Don't signal in Dallas until you're about to merge, otherwise its just an invite for people to close the gap.

when I was at UT, Austin traffic seemed to suck pretty bad on 35 and Mopac, as worse as Dallas, but it was just such a smaller scale. The drive to Roundrock seems pretty brutal at 5PM though. Thank God i lived on Riverside. It wasn't too bad.

I've lived in Fort Worth for 20 years, and IMO the drivers here are much better than the idiots in Dallas... :p I hate driving in Dallas traffic...

OMG - I was just realizing that the other day. A turn signal isn't interpreted by other drivers as a gentle "I'd like to get over, please," but rather as "I'm going to merge out in front of you, which will somehow cause you to be less of a man. Bet you can't stop me!"

Like I said, it's prob due to my being less familiar with the exits etc...

The construction seems to be wrapping up, some nice new roads your way:thumbsup:

That's what I was trying to say, driving in Ft. Worth >>>>>>>>>>>> Dallas for drivers and traffic.

Hit the nail on the head. In Dallas a turn signal is like a yellow light. It means floor it.
