OK, I recently purchased Baldur's Gate II. I had previously beaten BG I and TotSC. I uninstalled those games but kept a copy of both the character and saved game files. I installed BG II and started a new game. In the character creation screen I chose "import". It then brought up a box with the options: Saved Game, Character File, and Cancel. First I tried Saved Game. It brought up a box split vertically. The the left most partition was titled import. Across the bottom of the box were the buttons, the only one I could chose was back though. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to import from this screen. I could find no way to select a directory and the only thing I could select was the back button. So I hit back and this time chose Character File. However, I encountered similar problems. I decided that it was probably happening because I uninstalled BG I and it was looking for some registry entry for the saved games or something. I reinstalled both BG I and TotSC and copied the saved game and character files into it. I then started up BG II again and tried to import. However, I had the same exact troubles. Has anyone succesfully done this and know what the heck is going wrong on my end. I would really appreciate the help.

Just had another idea. Would it work if I uninstalled BG II and then tried reinstalling maybe?

This is what it says in the readme.txt that came with the game..

To import a character from a saved game (either from Baldur's
Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, or Baldur's Gate II) copy
the save directory into the directory entitled SAVE in the Baldur's
Gate II root directory. Then, begin Baldur's Gate II, start a
new game, choose the import option at the bottom of the screen
and follow the instructions.

To import a character from a character file (either from Baldur's
Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, or Baldur's Gate II) copy the
character file (xxxxxxxx.CHR) into the directory entitled
CHARACTERS in the Baldur's Gate II root directory. Then, begin
Baldur's Gate II, start a new game, choose the import option at
the bottom of the character generation screen and follow the
instructions.

Importing a character that uses a custom portrait requires
that you either choose a portrait from among the existing
portraits or re-import your custom portrait by placing the
portraits in the directory entitled PORTRAITS found in the
root directory of Baldur's Gate2. After you've chosen a
portrait hit DONE to continue the character selection.

You can import hacked characters into Baldur's Gate 2,
however their experience will be capped to the maximum possible
gained from Tales of the Sword coast.

I suggest you start over with a fresh character as they have new classes now, personally i've chosen a monk and altho she is weak at start, becomes really strong as she levels up later on.
And you will find lot of magic items from BGI in the beginning and there are much more and better items to come later. just my suggestion. Good luck.

it did work for me by the way, when i tried to import that is.

Thanks Mustang, I'll give that a try. I just went through reinstalling it and it didn't work. I'm glad you posted that. I read the manual, didn't even think to look at the readme...doh.
