Anyone who bought Xeon equivalent of C2D care to comment on your experience with this line of chips?

They work the same. The warranty is 5 years compared to 3 years, that is the only difference.

Lopri has one. I believe they hit about the same overclocks as 'regular' C2Ds but with fewer volts. Maybe he will drop by and confirm. He has the Xeon 3060 (the E6600 equivalent).

I have played with numerous xeons. They are the same processor. They will hit the same overclocks. They are from later weeks so they may take less oltage, as the manufactuering process has gotten a bit better.

I got one of the Xeon 3060s on ebay for $199. It should be here early next week. I'll post my results when it arrives.

I have two Dell 2950 servers with 2x Dual core Xeon 5110 which has the Woodcrest core.

I tell you, it's like night and day over my old dual cpu xeon netburst set ups.

I also have 24 C2D Dell Inspiron 6400's, I understand they are completely different animals, but to be honest, I don't notice a huge difference, aside from the obvious Disk differences(10,000rpm SAS Raid 5 vs. 5,400rpm SATA)

If you're getting one with 4MB cache I'd say go for the 3060...if you're getting a 2MB chip just get the E6300 or E6400 and save some $$. I had an E6600 that was hungry for volts and wouldn't do over 3.47GHz without raising the vcore sky high. I now have a Xeon 3060 and it will do about 3.72GHz but I keep it at ~ 3.6GHz to keep the voltage down. As Yoxxy said though it's the same chip and I think I got lucky rather than anything. There still might be a better chance that you'll end up with a good chip if you grab a Xeon instead. I think Lopri has got a pretty decent chip.

This eVGA 680i board seems to have a lot of room left for the FSB. I can get my system to post @ 4.2GHz but it won't boot into windows any higher than ~ 3.9GHz. I've got a VapoLS on the way so that might change things a bit. :D

That was an amazing price. Everyone else is selling at $350+. Something isn't right.

Yeah I couldn't believe it either. It's ebay auction # 330053416764
Maybe you can see something I missed. I was the only bidder. The guy has 100% positive feedback and the CPU is listed as new. What did I miss?

Well, I guess I'll find out soon enough. The guy's feedback rating convinced me it was on the up and up. He has 108 positive and 0 negative feedbacks. The auction stated that the processor was unopened. If the seal is broken, I'll have something to gripe about I suppose.

The deal looks kosher to me. Good luck.

congrads on 3.72! That's really good result! But I'd imaging you need better cooling than stock to hold the temp down as most people having heat problem at 3.5/6.

So will the socket 775 xeon chips work out of the box with any brand new retail core 2 duo supporting motherboard?
Cause thats all i'm really concerned about.I don't want to go thru the hassle of putting my old P4 in just to make it boot and do a bios flash.
Please confirm.

Looks like you got a great price. If you're patient, there are some excellent deals to be had on ebay. The memory and video card in my rig are from there (brand new) and were each about $100 less than the going retail prices at the time.

I'll probably buy a 3060 when I upgrade in a month or two. The price difference between that and the E6600 is small enough that you don't lose much even if it doesn't overclock much better.

Hi,

Current E6600 seems to do just as well as Xeon 3060. At the time of my Xeon purchase, E6600s generally maxed out around 3.40~3.50GHz (air). My Xeon 3060 does up to 3.80GHz Orthos stable, but I'd prefer running @3.60~3.70GHz for several reasons (temp, memory ratio and timing, etc.). In general, my chip responds to voltages very well and runs very very cool. I've been running it @3.60GHz on a 680i board, and load temperature tops around 54~56C, with occasional spike to 58~60C. (according to CoreTemp. nTune reports +4~5C higher temps) While toying with memory, I lowered the multiplier to x8, and had the proc running @3.20GHz (8x400). That is at actual stock voltage (1.312V, 1.350V selected in BIOS), load temp around 40C.

Overall I like this chip alot and it's better than any other C2D chips that I had, but my C2D chips were all early week samples. (Week 21~23) Recent E6600s seem to do whole lot better than earlier ones, so I can't say for sure the Xeon is better than E6600. Most E6600s these days seem to be capable of 3.60GHz and beyond.
