Games are typically blacked out in the host city when the home arena is NOT near a sell-out. Yep, you had better believe some lawyers got fat off of that provision. Well, the national network blacks out the game. Some smaller, local station will likely carry it. (I don't know if MSG qualifies as a smaller station).

Anyhoo, the Hornets are done. Lakers in 4 and then again in 4. And next season they'l get chamopionship #4 ... in a row.

I was actually hoping the Hornets would make the finals in their last season in Charlotte. Too bad a stadium/arena is a major reason for the move.

how so are some lawyers fat off that provision? why would the cable company show me a blue screen telling me the game is blacked out, rather then playing the game? do they still not have commercials to air?

last night, the laker game was blacked out on TBS. It was shown locally by Fox Sports Net. For football it's about sellouts if it's broadcast locally, but the Lakers sell out every single game almost, and even if they don't, home games are always on FSN. I think it has to do with local broadcast rights. You'll have to refer to those regulations above :)

The lawyers that got fat on this are those who helped write and lobby the blackout clauses for the NBA (and whomever else) into their TV contracts.

At present, I cannot pull up the regulations link (site down or a firewall issue), ...

... but my impression of blackout is to get more butts in the seats at these sporting events. If the games are sold out (more money from ticket prices), then there is no need to "punish" those without tickets by not airing the game (more advertising dollars for the airing TV station, which helps pay its contract to the league). If the game isn't sold out, "punish" the locals, because their butts should have been at the game and tix were still available.

Again, without looking at the regulations, why would the FCC care if a sporting event is/isn't aired? I'm guessing that someone convinced them to care. To me, it looks like a money issue.

Am I making sense? I'll revise my post once I get home and can read the regs. That is, if I am way off-base. :)
