The reception for Andy (Ch. Chuckanut Party Favour O' Novel), the golden retriever, was telling. He is from Bellingham, Wash., and owned by Ken Matthews and Wayne Miller. Time and again, Andy elicited the evening's most raucous response.

Matthews, showing the dog, was jolted by the reception. "They are popular, but that was like thunder," he said. "It was like, 'Holy, moly.' "

He's afraid of cameras...and garbage cans...and my dad, and especially my dad holding a garbage can while I'm trying to take a picture of him, so its hard to take a good picture of him. I think he inherited his dads looks, and unfortunatly, his mothers tendancy to randomly kill other dogs.

For those of you not in the loop, Westminster = the Super Bowl of dog shows, the final four = really really really good, my puppy = CUTE.

So I'm rather proud, and a little angry that they didn't do this a couple years earlier so we could have strapped a zero onto the end of how much we sold the rest of the puppies for :D

Anywho, just thought I'd share.

I thought golden retrievers were fairly placid and friendly?

Dog shows aren't really my passion but I do love animals and that's one nice dog you have there!

I know, so gorgeous. My sister was watching best in show and all I hear is "oh crap" when he was stacked up, Andy is great, but not that good.

Yeah...he's...very odd. We cant figure out why he doesn't like me dad, since he's never been anything but nice to him. He's also afraid of doors, the dark, windows, ducks, and our rabbits.

His mom is a grade A bitch, she has a tendancy to kill other female dogs, and occasionally goes after our German Shepard. She is, however, absurdly sweet around most male dogs and all people. Martin's certainly more placid than his mom, but has gone after a couple of his brothers when they get together for "puppy playdays." Other than that he's just a big pile of fluff who's fallen asleep on my tummy on multiple occasions

I just can't believe you bred a dog agressive golden retriever. Are all of the buyers of the puppies aware of this trait? I'm sorry but no matter how many shows a dog wins, if they have such a bad temperment fault as that they should not be bred. It is a detrament to the breed.

First a little background on her: A local breeder that we got our first golden from (had to put him down a month ago just before his tenth birthday - cancer) decided they were going to get out of the business, but they still had two 6 month olds - a brother and sister. They wanted to keep the brother so they decided to give us the sister on one condition: we have a litter of puppies of which they get to keep a couple. They dont have kids, so they have puppies.

At that point we were boarding a lot of dogs, so she went from being with just her brother to a rather constant stream of strange, albeit very friendly, dogs, so she had a bit of "culture shock" I would think. I think she got into it with three dogs out of the 250+ we boarded in those first couple of years. We've figured out that she's afraid of the dark, so that's when she gets aggressive usually. The only time she's done any real damage was when our german shepard and her got into a tussel over a stick and they both came out of it bleeding, but not badly hurt. Hasn't happened since, and when we take her out on walks or to a park (on leash of course) she hasn't done anything even remotely aggressive.

Maybe I overstated her aggressive tendancies, since neither the breeder (who has much more experience than I do in this sort of thing), nor Ken and Wayne (Andy's owners and a couple wonderful guys, I think they just had their 26th anniversary last week) seemed terribly worried about it. We would not have bred her if we believed the puppies would be aggressive. Martin seems to be the only one with even a hint of a mean streak, the rest of the buyers (who were informed of the mothers shortcomings in great detail) have not reported any aggression issues. In fact, Martin is very submissive 99% of the time.

Detrimental to the breed? Not in the least. The puppies are all happy and healthy, plus most of them are being shown and several are well on their way to being champions themselves. Is she more aggressive than most goldens? Slightly, is she aggressive enough to warrant concern? Not even close.
