I'm not interested in spending more than $500. Alright, maybe $700 tops.

I need a DVD and a VCR.

I wouldn't mind also having a tuner, and or something like a DVD recorder.

thanks in advance ATOT -

Wife said at wally world they are selling the Sanyo dvd/vcr combos for $50. Not the cheap mono versions but full stereo ones with progressive out at well.

I say get a cheap or used VCR, and a DVD/audio deal like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...yId=pcmcat40200050002&id=1140391861581

I'm no audio buff, but it's easy and works great. I have no use for a DVD recorder, but with your budget a Tivo might be fun.

For no audio system a DVD/VCR combo is fine. They are less than $100 now. My wife and i bought a 32" TV and combo unit so we could dump the old TV and the combo in the bedroom. Spent about $400. We originally wanted a small LCD TV but they are still too pricey.

thanks guys.

I saw some cheap (i assume you get what you pay for) DVD/speaker systems at BustBey...

I don't really know where to start.

I've got a TV, no surround speakers (i have little kids so I don't want to big, or expensive speakers within 40'' of the floor.)

This has come about because our old VCR died, and our VCR/DVD combo is missing a remote... i've bought a universal, but it didn't have the appropriate codes listed for that unit (its a Erikson - not too common).

Are the DVD recorders things any good?

Onkyo Home Theater In a Box systens are good if you spend $300-400, add the DVD/VCR combo and you're set.

The Onko satellite speakers can be wall-mounted.

Agreed - best way to go

Yamaha, JVC, and Samsung also make good HTIB - many come with built in DVD or DVD-R drives.
