Anyone wanna summarize Half Life for me? (spoilers)

You all knew there was one person out there on this planet who hasn't played Half Life. Well that person is me. Now that you know, would anyone care to sum up what happens in that game? I just startet playing HL2 and it seems it heavily pull from the first one already, so I'm feeling a bit lost.

Just a paragraph will do, somethin to give me an idea of what went on. Clearly don't hold anything back, I'll likely never play the first one so spoilers are certainly welcome. Ending and all. Thanks. =p

Watch what you read, though...I think that site may have some HL2 spoilers as well. All you really need to read about is the Black Mesa incident (HL1).

Wow - I've played both HL & HL2 and had no idea about the stuff mentioned in that time-line link. HL2 was fun to play, but the plot just went over my head. Maybe I was enjoying the game too much to pay attention to all the dialog.
