EVO 4G - iPhone 4 - Droid X

IMO these are the biggest players right now (Droid later this month). Something keeps telling me to hold out for Windows 7 phones being that Microsoft is about the only one with enough muscle and dollars to compete with Apple. Some info for the uninformed : http://www.engadget.com/product/windows-phone-7-series

Holding out for a 7 phone might not be a bad idea. Thoughts?

Microsoft has yet to show me any compelling reason to want to own a device running any version of Windows Mobile...

Sorry sir, but Android app store is a far far far cry from iTunes. From regular apps to games it's a trouncing. Microsoft is the only one that will be able to compete on the same level. Allow me to retort, if you think the Android market is anywhere near the quality of Apples iTunes, then you sir are the one that needs to be informed.

Granted, and I've heard as much. But from what I gather from Endgadget, this is completely revamped OS and similar to Zune software. The thing thats interesting with Windows 7 phones is Microsoft's Marketplace. IMO phones are only as good as its software and that in the end truly will decide whether Windows has a place in the mobile market.

not really, tho I'm curious how well it will integrate with microsoft products (office/sharepoint/exchange). It might be the ultimate work phone if it does it well. Granted, I don't really want a phone that is more work geared... but could be a huge plus for enterprise.

Personally, I'm still grasping for a lucky double from HP. I really like WebOS. I want it to have some sort of place in all this. But I'm also not as obsessed with apps as mainstream is.

Look at Zune.

Inferior as a software to iTunes.

How is the phone going to be better?

Impossible.

You're misinformed if you think you can say the difference is a "far far far cry". The app stores are very similar at this point with multiple apps for virtually everything on both app stores. Every major iPhone app developer either has brought out or is working on Android versions of their top games and apps as well. EA has put full support behind the Android Market.

"Apple’s App Store has over 100,000 apps in it. Google’s Android Marketplace has 30,000. Apple wins, right? Wrong. There’s pretty much an app for everything you’d need on Android. Every app I use on my iPhone has an Android version, most of the time by the same developer." -Anand

If you don't think Android can compete with Apple, you must be very new to the whole smartphone world.

Not in the least. No multitasking, come on, seriously? I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in it.

The Apple app store is better than the Android app store, it's been around considerably longer and has a much larger install base. As Android gains market share and expands it's user base it will catch up. There are some apps I am still waiting for, namely the NC General Statutes app. The iTunes store has two of them. The actual number of real apps on both devices is hard to tell. The Apple store has a hundred fart apps and the Android store counts keyboard skins as apps. In the long term both will succeed, as will Blackberry. Nokia's Symbial or whatever they are working on this month probably won't. It will be around for a good while due to it's massive popularity oversees but I don't think they will survive. WM7, it's to early to tell yet but I don't have high hopes.

Android will trounce the mobile marketplace, by sheer volume.

Android V 3.0 will have a polished music ecosystem according to the rumors.

Apple will continue on and be very successful, enjoying a profit margin few ever have/will.

BB and Nokia are going to slide in marketshare IMHO, Microsoft is essentially a non player at this point and with the way they have developed/marketed mobile products recently, they're pretty much screwed...

I'm on a Nexus One at the moment and am looking forward to see what WP7 devices hit the market this holiday season. Dell's exposed offering looks particularly nice (though their Android device looks just as good). No guarantee I'd switch from Android and the synchronous Google ecosystem, but I'll be looking.

I basically want a cohesive music and video handling environment and basically having a Zune HD integrated into a phone would be great upgrade over Android media players. I'm also hoping for better battery life with WP7 over my current Nexus One.

Hmm, didn't notice anything great when I was browsing with my cousins EVO. Don't get me wrong, great phone and it has me wanting it but I'd hate to get into a new 2yr if W7 phones could provide a better experience.

Yea, have you heard of the latest Microsoft phone? It's called the Kin. And it's been scrapped about a week into sales (or lack of). Because it's crap.

Yeah I saw that. And I think the reason they scrapped it was because it really didn't portray the OS the way M$ wanted it to. So to avoid bad press leading up to WP7 launch they pulled it. According to Endgadget (love those guys) it was bad all around. From research and development, marketing to implementation. They really dropped the ball there but these new phones aren't of the "danger" ilk, its iPhonesk in design as all good smartphones are these days.

It will be at least that long until MS gets all the kinks worked out of any WM release they're working on...

Seeing as WM7 is a near-complete rewrite of previous versions, you'll forgive me for regarding it as a "1.0" product (and will therefore be avoiding it like the plague).

I'll be happy to give it due consideration when it is relatively feature-complete, mature, stable, and bug-free... :D

Sounds like you just want an iPhone? Pick up an iPhone 4 after Apple fixes the antenna flaw.

And just because a smart phone has a touch screen, does not make it iPhonesk.

I'm eager to see what Windows phone 7 brings to the table.
By Christmas, we should see what everyone is offering and hopefully HP can show us some WebOS devices too.
This is why I think I'm going to hang on to my HD2 until then.
I'm still going to get other phones to play with(mainly the iphone 4) when I can find a deal on it in the meantime.

MS need to make Window phone 7 UI prettier though.
I don't mind the tiles thingy, but you can definately make prettier than just a SOLID SQUARE color.
How the UI look is very important to me as I have to stare at it constantly.
I still think the Sense UI for window mobile is the best looking one.(after I customized it).
Its why I still love my HD2. Such a pretty phone with a great looking UI.

Imo, I would get one of the new Android Devices coming out and wait for WP7 to mature.

I got 2 upgrades on my account so if I want to upgrade again in 6 months or so I can.

I'll wait and see. Didn't like the first iterations of Android (and their devices), probably won't like the first WM7.

i might be wrong, but wasn't one of the failing points of the kin, the stupidly expensive data plan you had to buy from verizon?
