It's gonna be hot that time of year.

It'll be hot most places that time of year. Personally I would have preferred to go to Patagonia or Macchu Picchu, but she only has limited PTO time so we need something where transit time is minimized (we're on the East Coast) and is reasonably priced as we'll be paying for a wedding at the same time.

Mind speaking to the logistics of intra-country travel within Costa Rica as we'd like to visit various sights while there (rainforest, volcano, etc)?

LOL!

Better take a large arse cushion. The roads are a combination of craters and bus sized holes, that's if there is pavement - and there are few rules of the road. Who ever is bigger and faster wins.

The volcanoes and rainforest are spectacular. I only traveled from a resort though and didn't drive. So I can't speak to the travel.

I went last summer. We went to the Pacific side, everyone says it's nicer than the Caribbean side.

It's well renowned for Deep Sea Fishing and Surfing.

The National parks are cool. We also stayed at a resort 5 minutes outside of a town (Jaco). That was good because you could go to the town at night or to eat, but be a little isolated when you wanted to be.

I have family down there... My brother and sister in-law live in Escazu, in the mountains overlooking San Jose valley. We've been a bunch of times and even know some guys who own a tour company. LMK if you need any help, feel free to PM or IM me.

Beautiful country and a joy to travel to.

As for Travel, seriously consider flying to some of the more remote locations. Last time we went to Manual Antonio National Park, it was either a 7 hour bus ride, or a 20 minute flight. We took the flight, and not bad either at like $50/person.

Also, don't really plan to spend much time in the capital, San Jose. Its the best place to fly into, but the city itself isn't much to visit. There are far more interesting places to visit.

My wife and I went there last summer, we had a blast. We went all inclusive and arranged most of our outings through the resort/swiss travel. We did taxi it a few times. As for the roads, they are decent on the flat land, but when you get off the main roads into the mountains they get fairly hairy. If you need anything specific, drop me a PM as we spent 2 weeks there and traveled the country a fair bit. Good Luck, and good choice.

I agree with the others about driving, don't recommend it. Outside of San Jose, the road upkeep really really sucks, if you lucky enough to even drive on a paved road. The drive on the Pan American Highway north from San Jose to Guanacaste out to Playa Hermosa was the most pot hole ridden road i've EVER seen - http://flickr.com/search/?q=costa+rica+pot+holes You would literally be driving 50-60mph and swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid 5-6ft pot holes :)

Also, the drive to Monteverde is a bit treacherous and not for the faint of heart. Dirt road literally on the side of cliffs, with big ass rocks that tip the car towards the edge. We did it in the rain once, haha, talk about holding onto the 'oh sh!t' bar :) Its worth the trip, by all means, but haha, hold on tight :)

Fergot to mention, there is even one small place on the way to Monteverde, called 'La Trocha' that they had to pave since it was a super super steep incline and non-4 wheel vehicles kept sliding off a cliff at the bottom. It was a shortcut ;)

Prices have skyrocketed over the past few years... almost double what we used to pay...

We fly to San Jose, CR either American Airlines direct from Miami or Spirit Air direct from Ft. Lauderdale
