Thinking about vacationing in athens for a week around Sept. Anyone here care to share experiences, tips, good places to eat or stay?

Athens ain't that great! What are you looking for? The Greek islands are where the fun is, although September is towards the end of the summer season.

Actually, parts of mainland Greece are quite nice, just not Athens!

I've vacationed in Greece every summer for the past three years.

I'm thinking of 3 nights Athens then 3 on Mykonos or another island and then back for a night in Athens before flying home.

Which Greek island do you spend most of your time at?

Theres no point in going that far for just a week man.. theres way to much to do.

FYI, Mykonos is a haven for gay tourists. That's fine, just letting you know it has that reputation.

I vacation on the island next door: Naxos (see sig for pics). It offers a nice blend of sandy, family-friendly beaches and good nightlife.

Santorini is the photographer's paradise but lacks in nightlife.

If you want extreme peace and quiet, then I suggest some of the smaller islands like Syros, Sifnos, Donoussa, and Antiparos.

You could also head west from Athens instead of south to the Cyclades (mentioned above). Going west, you could explore more of mainland Greece, then head off to Corfu (home of the infamous Pink Palace), Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. These (Ionian) islands arguably offer more of a southern Italian feel.

If you start to plan seriously, I can provide all sorts of other recommendations.

As was said, that is simply too far to go to spend so little time IMO. I would forget the, "see as much as you can in so little time" spiel. Go, relax, and try to sit still long enough to absord some culture. Fly to Athens (takes a day from the USA), take a 4-hour boat ride to an island, and just chill and explore that island. Getting back to the US also takes a day.
