Anyone using the A8V-E SE motherboard?

If you want data corruption problem with VIA, I can give you some..

And to scare you more, first motherboard with VIA kt890 chipset were not compatible with the X@ processors. It as been fixed with newer version of the chipset.. I think.


I've used nforce2, nforce3 and nforce4 chiipset. No corruption of any kind. I've done video editing with them.. that means moving BIG files.. and playing with them.. No corruption here. As for the Firewall, I know one that use it without any corruption.. At worst, you can always disable it... And use something like Zonealarm.

The more product on the market, the more problem you are likely to hear about. And if there were true, like the VIA one about not supporting X2 cpu, then you'll hear about it in major web site.

BTW, I've used VIA too.. no problem with them. And I'm now using ULI.. no problem yet.

I still have to have problem with any system I build...

 
It IS true, the VIA K8T890 does not support X2's. VIA said it themselves. They said it would require a revision to the chipset. Check here.
 
I own an A8V-E Deluxe, which I think is great, but I don't know much about the SE version other than unlike the A8V-E Deluxe it will support dual-core and does not support firewire. If it is anything like the Deluxe, it should overclock quite well (I have my 2.2Ghz 3700+ stable at 2.8Ghz). However, VIA is in the process of getting the K8T900 chipset out to market, which also supports dual-core, so sometime this year I expect to see a new ASUS Deluxe model that supports dual-core (if you can wait).

I am waiting for the k8t900 boards to come out, but no one knows when they will be released. Anyone have solid information about the release date?

the problem is, this was stated long time ago.. and currently, there are very few on the market, that still do.. VIA currently is not a major player in the chipset market, especially on the X2 front.
Where does that leave us.. the consumer... either nForce4.. or until recently ATI's Crossfire

HotHardware did an evaluation of a reference board back in November. Since the K8T900 is pin-for-pin compatable with existing K8T890 motherboards, they figured that the K8T900 motherboards would start showing up as K8T890 chipset stocks dwindle and expected to see a VIA Rapidfire board come February. However, the K8T900 was specifically designed for the new AMD M2 socket with DDR2 support and motherboard makers might wait for the new socket to introduce the K8T900 chipset. Another reason I like the VIA chipsets is that the HotHardware review proclaimed the K8T900 chipset tied the performance of the Nvidia chipsets. http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx

However, many of the newer Nvidia chipset designs use heatpipes to move the heat away from the chip (like the ASUS Premium and dual X16 SLI boards) which limit your case choices as you cannot use the boards in reverse ATX case designs. Bigger fanless heatsinks are not an option on the Nvidia single-chip designs, as it would block one of the PCI Express graphic slots. I expect the new K8T900 North and companion South bridges to be fanless anyway (without resorting to heatpipes) which preserves the ability to use any case, reverse ATX or not. The Nvidia has to have at least some sort of fan, or the limiting heatpipes.
