Anyone using sharepoint services 3.0?

I'm in the process of setting up a basic WSS 3.0 installation. The company has AD organized using OU's (most likely since the company I work for actually owns several smaller companies). We're an exchange shop and thus have perfect distribution groups.

Even though the differences are, imo, not very well documented I've come to the conclusion that you cannot assign sharepoint permissions by using exchange/AD distribution groups.

It also appears that you cannot use OU's either (for example, when modifying permissions within sharepoint I can search my AD schema but only security groups and users show up)

Any suggestions? I've searched the forums, google, etc and have seen comments that indicate there is some way to delegate sharepoint permissions using AD OU's but there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to do this..

If there's no other alternative I can just create security groups that mimic my OU's but that means yet another step when adding a new user...

Thanks!

Why not just change the distribution groups to email-enabled security groups. That would do exactly what you want to do.

And this won't affect my existing distribution groups at all?

Edit:

To clarify, I also have nested distribution groups - i.e. can a 'converted' security group have distribution groups as members?

Figured I'd update..

Changing the distrobution groups to security groups didn't cause any issues with nested groups and allowed me to use my existing groups with sharepoint services 3.0 (figured I'd add the details so it'd come up in search..)
