you don't need a super fast computer, but when it comes to producing music you need a lot of RAM, IMO.
You need Digidesign hardware. Probably the Mbox2. You can get the Mbox1 for cheap but don't buy it because support will end for it soon (you won't be able to run new versions of Pro Tools on it.. The Mbox2 is a USB 1.1 device.
I've run Pro Tools on hardware as poor as a 867Mhz G4 Powerbook. It's a pretty efficient application, but as you add more tracks and effects it sucks up more and more resources. The hardware you described can more than run it.
