Here's the setup I'm trying to get working. I have the SMC2804WBR v2 wireless router (with WDS capability) currently hooked up. Use my laptop downstairs and across the house where my ReplayTV also happens to be. Bought an SMC2870W which can function as a wireless bridge or as an access point with repeater functionality. Currently the ReplayTV is hooked up to SMC2870W which is configured as a bridge. However, I would like to configure it as an access point so the laptop gets better bandwidth while still using the RJ-45 jack for the ReplayTV.

1) Is this possible? Once I set the SMC2870W to be a wireless access point, can I still use the RJ-45 jack on the back?

2) When I tried this, for some reason the SMC2870W and the SMC2804WBR could only communicate when they were both in the same room. Move it even as close as the hallway and the router doesn't see the WAP anymore. This seems weird because the darn thing works fine in bridge mode from clear across the house! Is this a defective unit?

If you configure it as an Acces Point it can not talk to the Wireless Router.

Try to configure it as a repeater.

Actually, it's a bit odd, but in order to configure it as a repeater, you must configure it as an access point and then enable the WDS/repeater capability.
