Anyone using a Tyan Tsunami 1830 mobo? What brand & model memory are you using?

Apparently the board is pretty picky. I've seen their memory compatibility page but was wondering if anyone was able to use something not on the page.

So far I get *nada* when I try to boot. Just a yellow light on the mobo near the CPU. Tried reseating the processor, a Cel2 633 in an MSI 6905 v2.3 MASTER slocket, with Kingston Value Ram 32meg 4x64meg chips, non-SPD, non-ECC. Also the BIOS may need to be flashed but I need to get to boot first.

Anyone running this mobo?

Yes. I use a TYAN 1830S with 2 x 128MB Centon PC100 from Circuit City. They're model #128MBPC1002 with all chips marked VT-something, ending with 7. All chips are on one side of the stick. (I'll pull them and give you the exact nos. if you really want to know.) I've also tested two Apacer PC133 128MBs. The Apacers are P/N 71.73350.114.

Both brands worked with Celeron PPGA 500 in Abit Slotket III, and also with P3 500 Katmai slot 1. The board booted fine with both brands, but I believe both are on the TYAN approved list.

In the SDRAM display at bootup, one of the PC1002 Centons shows up as DRB2 and 128MB. The other one, purchased a week later, shows as (in 3rd slot) DRB6 64MB and DRB7 64MB. But I don't know what it means.

Centon model #128MBPC1002a is double sided (or whatever it's called) and it also booted. Chips on it are not VT. I don't recall what was on them.

Post-486 computer hardware obviously isn't my strong point, but I hope this at least gives you a couple of data points.

Thanks! Especally cool is that I have a Circuit City local so I can return it if it doesn't work out. Also, I can see how big the stick is in advance. This must be the biggest "Baby AT" allowable! I have a Baby AT case and the drives are right over the DIMMs so I can't use a DIMM over an inch tall.

Yeppers, it's a full Baby AT board, same size as the 486/50 board it replaced. My case is one of those cavernous late-'80s AT server towers that can hold a full AT board, with Antec 300W big-L PS. Lots of room to easily attach connectors. And a fun machine to use, even if not the best money can buy anymore. ;-)

You might want to look at the Tyan mobo forum at
http://www.deja.com/[ST_rn=fs]/group/alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.tyan
for assorted information about the 1830s and their Super 7 AT board (1590s?), which shares many of the same quirks.

Someone there said Kingston memory doesn't work with Tyan. There is also info on getting USB to work. Bottom line on USB: use a powered hub or a PCI card if your mobo ports won't run your stuff. There's also something about TYAN saying you must disable the onboard USB before flashing BIOS, although some people claim it caused no problem to not disable USB.

Did you get your Tyan S1830S to work with the Cel2/633 CPU you had in your configuration? If so, did you have to flash the board with the v.2 BIOS offered on Tyan's web site?

Anand's review of this board lists the minimum CPU core voltage at 1.5 V. Getting Tyan to confirm this has not been successful since their technical support appears to be substandard even for motherboard manufacturers. I hope your S1830S system is working to your satisfaction.

I've been sidetracked. So far I've been using a PII-233. I need to flash the BIOS and try a better processor.

Curious problem. It doesn't see my CD-ROM which is connected to my old Creative sound card, came in a multimedia bundle. Makes it kind of difficult to load the PCI-bridge driver w/o the CD-ROM!
