Anyone using 5870 HDMI output to a 1080P?

I haven't had much luck with DVI out to HDMI in on my Samsung 1080p, so I'm using DVI to VGA which shows "PC" connected, and it scales properly.

Anyone tried 5870 HDMI out to a 1080p HDMI in? If so, what scaling experience can you report? Thanks..

What exactly doesn't work with your DVI -> HDMI?

Are you using the ATi supplied adapter, or a 3rd party cable? I'd suggest the former any day of the week :)

VGA input on most TVs is outright terrible. Good analog is usually overlooked by everyone these days :(

HDMI at 1080p with 8ch PCM should be absolutely no problem for a 5870. My buddy has it working perfectly on his 4850, and it works fine for me on my 4830.

Could be some driver bugs. New product and all...

Cat 9.9 for Vista 64
4890
Samsung 40" 1080p
quality 6ft DVI to HDMI cable

I connect from DVI out on card to HDMI #1 per Samsung manual. In ATI driver I select 1920 x 1080. Text is blurry and picture doesn't fill whole screen. If I select other resolutions like 1680 x 1050, text is clear and picture fills the whole screen.

Per the Samsung manual:

When connecting using DVI/HDMI

if the signal from the system doesn't equal the standard signal mode, adjust the mode by referring to your video card user guide..

a chard in Samsung manual that shows freq settings

1680 x 1050 text

1920 x 1080 text

The 1920 x 1080 screenshot above looks better in this pic for some reason, but actual screen is quite fuzzy. Is it an overscan/underscan issue? I've not found an area to adjust the frequencies as per the Samsung manual.

Using a DVI to VGA cable, the TV configures using the "PC" connection and scales full screen with sharp text. In PC mode it even allows for an auto adjustment of frequencies. I see it move the picture around slightly and it centers perfectly. I'd love to get a DVI>HDMI connection working but would gladly switch to a card with an actual HDMI output if HDMI to HDMI allowed for proper scaling!

I can imagine a scenario, where a DVI->HDMI cable could screw up detection and proper signal passing from your graphics cards to the HDTV. Any reason you can't use the supplied DVI->HDMI ATi converter and a standard HDMI-HDMI cable? That's the way I always connect my 40" 1080p Samsung HDTV. As far as detection, scaling and sharpness this method has yet to fail me on my computer.

What themisfit said is the best advice --- are you using the ATI provided DVI to HDMI adaptor and a regular HDMI cable, or a DVI to HDMI cable? If using a DVI to HDMI cable, try using the ATI adaptor with a standard HDMI cable.

I have dual DVI output, no HDMI.

Well I tried the included DVI>HDMI adapter with a good HDMI cable, same thing. The screen is much brighter than with DVI>VGA at the same tv settings, but text is washed out and blurry. TV sharpness adjustment didn't help. Also, picture isn't filling whole screen, black about 1" on the sides and 1/2" top and bottom.

So I've tried the adapter with a straight HDMI cable, a DVI>HDMI cable, and a DVI>VGA cable. Going in to the VGA port on the Samsung results in text looking normal at the native res 1920 x 1080. Looks like I'll be sticking with the VGA cable for now.

Still wondering if a graphics card with an HDMI out would solve the problem. Only one way to find out. If anyone out there solved a similar problem with a native HDMI equipped card, please share..

With my 4650, I had to go into the CCC and change a setting..I think it was for overscan/underscan. I brought it up to 100% and voila, clear text and 100% screen utilization.

it's definitely a scan setting. either get it right in your driver, or maybe there is a "stop over-interpreting my signal" setting on the tv.

on my LG, it's called "just scan," heh.

also, i'm using a DVI cable and I adapt it to HDMI at the TV. i doubt using a native HDMI card will be any different in your situation, and you just have to get your scanning checked out.

Yea I fear you're right, I've read a few compeitive brand manuals and have found settings like the "just scan" setting you have. Unfortunatly no settings like that on my Samsung. JLee mentions a CCC setting but I've not found one. :(

i haven't used a radeon in 4 years so i have no experience with CCC, but I would try different combinations of the "scale image to panel size" and the scanning slider on the "scaling" tab. jlee will know more about this than i would.

Yes.. that's what I can't find with the new CCC 9.9. :|
Thanks for posting that.. I knew I've seen it before with CCC.

I can't believe they'd do away with these important options. Someone with 9.9 CCC, did they bury the these options somewhere?!?

go back to CCC 9.7?

softpedia hosts all the old versions and i'm pretty sure you can modify your CCC install without affecting the driver.

I'll see if I can find it - gotta hook the TV back up, and I need to find food...if I forget by the end of the day, shoot me a PM.

I have a fix for you. Connect your PC back up with DVI to HDMI using the HDMI-2 connection on the TV. It will initially be bright and blurry as you described. Open the TV menu and go to Input (the two RCA looking connectors) > Edit Name > HDMI2/DVI and select the name "PC". Like magic everything will be a perfect 1:1 just like VGA... except with a perfect digital connection.

I was wondering about bypassing the HDMI/DVI instructions and going for HDMI-2. I've seen the screen for renaming and will give it a shot. JLee, CCC is different with 9.9, still haven't found those settings yet. I'll try it all later, thanks. Time to hit a patio.. :)

There is most likely a "PC Mode" setting somewhere in the Samsung TV OSD menu. This should fix the blurry problem.

There is a PC mode, but it's tied to the VGA port. Renaming didn't help Adam, thanks though. Yea JLee, they introduced a new CCC with 9.8. I've tried everything. Oh well, thanks all..

You sure you selected "Edit Name" and used the drop down menu to select "PC" from the menu. I have a Samsung too and have the same symptoms as you described if I do not force PC mode. PC mode does work through HDMI, but the connection needs to be renamed.

Yep, I tried several times. It does change the screen a bit, nearly fills the screen but not all the way and still somewhat fuzzy text. Do you have a 32"? I could see it working on a 32" maybe, but I have a 40". Is the auto adjustment option available under the picture options menu after you do this?

My Samsung is a 5 series 37". It looks absolutly perfect with HDMI when I rename the connection to PC. I also get sound over HDMI with my X-Fi plugged into the primary GTX 280.
