Anyone using 256k DSL?

I'll be moving to an apartment next week. I will be switching from RR Cable to DSL 256k dsl. Will I see a big difference in internet browsing? Maybe I should just get 1.5Mb DSL?

Once you go cable, you never go back right? Ugh.

You'll definitely see a difference in download speed. surfing the net you may see some different, but probably not a whole lot.

Yea, thats why I didn't even ask about gaming, because I know that I will just have to give that up :disgust:

Wow. All cable/dsl providers in the UK have dropped the 300k products for 1mb minimum now.

I get 2mb for less than I used to pay 3 yrs ago for 512k.

cable is gonna cost me $44+ tax for 5.0Mbps, or I could go 1.5Mb DSL for $29.95, or 3MB DSL for $34.95

You'd think you'd include the price of the 256k DSL in there...

My 3mbps dsl is worth the $1.20/day or so that I pay for it.

Well at this point, I dont think I'm even going to consider it. I think it is $21.95

I pay $30/mo for 5mbps cable. every time they try to take me off this introductory price, I just call up and say I want to cancel and that I am switching to DSL and the extend the special pricing. 😛

Man..I pay $50 a month for 2mb.

Alaska sucks. 🙂

i''m in india, with 256k up/down dsl. net surfing speed is pretty good, a page might take 1 second to load as opposed to half. dl speeds suck at 27Kb/s 🙁

edit: it is only 8 dollars a month though.

DSL Modems are designed to do 8 Meg down, 1 Meg up.

So sad 🙁

Only in the U.S.

It's not the modems, per say, as it is the physical limitation of coax

I pay $17 for the phone line and $15 for the ISP for 26.4k dialup. My dad just paid the $650 setup for Directway (which has a 1 second ping to google) and $70/mo. If you DL 169MB at once it'll knock your connection down to about 48kbps.

...I'd gladly pay $30/mo for 256k DSL.

Coax is cable.

DSL is plain pair 24 or 26 gauge wire.

Works to 18,000 feet from an originating DSLAM DSL cabinet to your DSL Modem.

8 Meg to 6,000 feet

6 Meg to 9,000 feet

3 Meg to 12,000 feet

1.5 Meg to 15,000 feet

256K to 18,000 feet

Mileage varies according to which gauge wire and condition of wire run.

Also each DSL Microfilter added at the home end adds 3,500 feet to the loop length.

I worked on the Alcatel 1000 DSL Modem in 1996 which became the Worldwide standard for DSL.
