Don't put laminate down over real hardwood 🙂. Your dogs aren't going to hurt the real stuff either. If you have to constantly mop it because of mud it will wear out the shine if you use glossy polyurethane but even that takes awhile. Even if they did screw up the real stuff you can just refinish it before you sell the house and real wood will look better to a buyer.
We had real HW floors in our last house and they scratched it all up.....it was horrible
You would think they would eventually learn that they can grip better without claws extended.....apparently not

I think its more to do with the excitability of the dogs than size, we have two 60-70lb dogs, and every time the door bell goes they flip out and go charging to the door, then extend claws to apply brakes.
They also like to chase each other around the house with toys etc.
