We are considering putting down a laminate floor, but are concerned about dog's nails scratching it.

Anyone have any experience?

We asked the salesman and he was raving about it, saying dog's nails would be no problem.......yet he said to put felt pads on furniture legs and not to use a vacuum on it......which does not quite add up.

at the last startup i worked at they put it down on basement floor to make the office area and we had chairs with casters on them rolling around all the time and it didn't mar the surface at all.

it was apparently extremely easy to install as well.

I plan on doing my living room (about 400 square feet). Do you need to put some sort of spacer in there since it is such a large area?

No, you leave a 1/4" gap at all walls for movement, which is covered by skirting

When my parents remodeled our house 9 years ago they put in Pergo in all the new areas. THey loved it so much that 3 years ago they ripped out all the carpet downstairs and installed Pergo instead. It feels warm even in the middle of the night, your feet dont hurt standing on it (we are Indian so we don't wear shoes in the house) and it NEVER scratches. We have a dog, and have yet to see a scratch.

That stuff is nearly indestructible, but don't expect it to look as good as real hardwood flooring.

I have it in most of my house, have a Rott, and not a scratch! Highly recommend it.

Is there a lot of difference in quality?

I see an imitation on special at HD for about half the price of Pergo....it only has 15 year warranty as opposed to Pergo's 25, but still at half the cost.......

I have Pergo flooring throughouy my house. We also have a Golden Retriever that is an indoor dog. The floor has shown no visible signs of wear or damage from her nails. Heck, it is surviving my 2 kids, especially the 7 year old boy, so it must be pretty tuff! It is a great floor.

To clean it , we use this Floormate It works great.

I know someone who has Pergo and a golden retriever. So far, no scratches on the Pergo.

However ... my opinion of Pergo isn't very good. I think it's basically cheap crap and 3/4" hardwood flooring isn't that much more money - considering 3/4" Oak will last a whole lot longer than Pergo. Now, with that being said, I do have access to laminate flooring from Shaw. It's some great looking stuff -- and looks like it has a very durable finish on the surface - when compared to Pergo. You might want to see if a flooring dealer handles the Shaw laminates and take a moment to look at those products, too.

Mine is the cheap stuff from Mowhawk, it 's been down for over a year, and looks as good as the day I laid it.

BTW, I'd be sure to get the glueless kind (I think most are now).

I've never used it - only Bruce oak flooring. But then again, I bought it for $0.66 USD per square foot. :D

My parents have most of their 4000sq.ft. house covered in Pergo. It holds up GREAT and looks nice. Their 130-lb chocolate lab that gallops and slides everywhere has yet to put a single scratch in it. Even their mildly retarded housekeeper who doesn't know how to clean things properly hasn't harmed it.

Also, I just got Wilsonart (similar) laminate flooring installed in my kitchen at my new house. It looks fantastic.

Well we do have hardwood flooring which is currently covered up with very ugly carpet.
I would LOVE to expose the HW, but our 4 dogs charging around would wreck it in about a day.

So we either have to replace with better looking carpet or laminate......at least then the HW is still perfect underneath if we sell house or want to expose it in future.

I will check out Shaw though....thanks!

I just put in a laminate floor last weekend I got Quick Step with a 25 year warranty and it has a water warranty. They have the number one seam out there, Shaw and otheres will be paying them for the rights to use there seam. They warranty the floor even if you pull it up and reinstall it up to 3 times.

Here are a few PICS I will put more up when I get home tonight.

I have a Lowes & Home Depot close, and once the tax refund arrives, I plan on putting Pergo throughout most of our house. Would anyone recommend a place that would have a better kind than the other?

How much was it per sq/ft?

Most BM stores have it for $3.99 but Carpet Mills matched a online price of $2.15 a sq/ft remember you can talk everyone down in price.

Don't put laminate down over real hardwood :). Your dogs aren't going to hurt the real stuff either. If you have to constantly mop it because of mud it will wear out the shine if you use glossy polyurethane but even that takes awhile. Even if they did screw up the real stuff you can just refinish it before you sell the house and real wood will look better to a buyer.

We had real HW floors in our last house and they scratched it all up.....it was horrible
You would think they would eventually learn that they can grip better without claws extended.....apparently not
