Anyone used a laptop cooling system???

I was looking at this for the 900z I ordered as it'll have a XP2000+ and the reviews say it gets very warm with the 1500+ in it. I was wondering if this type of product is effective or not and wether you would spend money on one?

Yea laptop cooling is pretty pointless defeats the purpose of portable computing. But it does bring a big issue into play as notebook pocessors are still very hot. And AMD is abolutely terrible at notebook processors they freeze up and overheat etc. Even the current mobile P4s get pretty toasty.

I'd only look into a solution like that if my system was overheating and locking up -- and for some reason I couldn't return it due to those problems.

Did I post this in OT or GH? :disgust: All of what is being said here is redundant for me

For instance, when it's connected to my home network and not mobile I would like to crunch SETI for the TeAm on it, worthy no? Furthermore since you can't exactly or easily add case fans or extreme coolers to a lappy and SETI utilizes the CPU strenously, and keeping components cooler prolongs their life and increases stability I was hoping for input that would address the actual cooling performance of the product, Not wether it would inhibit mobility or some equally obvious issue, thanx for the input anyways and I'll keep my own council 😉

No! I buy it for everything 😉 I intend to use it on my home network and portable, what a novel concept......

Are you supposed to carry this thing around with you?
NOooooo, that pathetic observation was stupid :disgust:

You're overlooking the entire issue of usage, I do not intend for my lappy to sit in the corner waiting for me to leave the house, I will be tasking it mobile and stationary therefore in the stationary eviroment if external cooling can effectively lower temps and thus improve stability and longevity 3x$ is a small price to pay for it. All this 2 dimensional thinking with the mobility only mentality fails to address the question.......

I thought I expressed a valid opinion. Are you actually having lockups? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. Laptops are designed to run hot. Most likely your laptop will last longer than you will want to use it, anyways. Unless this helps the battery last longer, most people I know that have owned laptops regularly it's the battery that determines the life of the laptop. When the laptop gets old enough that it is no longer worth replacing the battery or the battery can no longer be obtained, then its end of life. It doesn't seem likely to me that cooling the laptop will extend its life. There may be some particular models that are exceptions to this, maybe you have one of them. However, I would think that if heat is an issue with a particular model laptop it will be enough of an issue to have lockups. So again, are you experiencing lockups?

LOL 🙂 thanx for the reasonable attitude and response I felt a flame war with the children coming 😉 I haven't even received it yet, I'm simply anticipating that an XP2000+ will warrant additional cooling when running SETI at night and was interested in the performance capability of the cooler I linked as I have no experience with them and thought perhaps another ATer had. You are most likely correct, I just know from my expeirence with AMD that extra cooling is always a plus and not having had an AMD lappy before expect this one to be rather hot running. Anyways I guess I'm just being a bit beligerent tonite and not in the mood for the obnoxious and pointless that doesn't help evaluate a product's effectiveness and only serves to deflect the issue, mu appologies for my lack of manners 🙂

Well I just hunted down a review on this product and it appears it cools quite well, is portable, and is well worth the minimal invest which comes to less than a quality heatsink for a desktop XP 😉 Link

Thanx brudda 😀 I knew I could count on a TeAm mate!

I own a similar laptop cooler that I got from CyberGuys and I've been very happy with how well it works. It keeps the fans in my Inspiron 8200 from ever coming on while the CPU is under minimal load. I bought it because the fans in the Inspiron 8200 aren't all that reliable (I already had to replace them once in the 6 months I've owned it). I think it would be a very worthwhile investment if you don't move your laptop around much.

You can also get a pcmia laptop fan - useful if the cpu is near the slot as it blows air into the computer - I had to use it when playing some games on my vaio laptop as it would put cpu usage at 100% constantly.
