I've used western union, but the fees are really high. XOOM.com sounds interesting, but I don't know anyone that has used it before.

mailing checks/money orders there is risky...any other cheap methods? citibank etc have services, but I think they require the person in India to give you their bank account number.

thanks,

WW

Wasn't Xoom a website-hosting service back in the day like TheGlobe.com or Geocities? :confused:

Have you tried PayPal...and this isn't sending payment for an eBay auction, is it...

this is for a gift actually, not ebay, etc.

xoom uses paypal apparently, but lets the recepient receive cash (rupees) at certain locations just like western union.

You can sign up for paypal in India, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get cash back out. I guess he'd have to transfer to his bank account. Does anyone use paypal to India? to send money back home, etc.

I like the idea of western union (it really works well...in a minute you can to the transaction, and the person in India can pick up the cash immediately)...but it's pricey. I spent $27 to send $200 the last time I did it.

thanks, I'll investigate the paypal route...it might be more of a hassle, but cheaper (free?)

in Hindi...

paisa = money
Nani = grandmother (your mother's mother)
baadmash = bad boy! :)

I was trying not to just say 'bump'....kind of like I'm doing now :)

Does Xoom transfer money by the local currency (from USD) with a lower converse rate?

I remember when I tried to use Xoom to transfer money from US to Asia for some friends and the converse rate was horrible.

And this is 10 years old thread.

I have been very fortunate in receiving a sum of US $6,000,000 via inheritance but the money is in India. Please provide me your bank account # so I can transfer this money to my own account, and I will give you 10 percent.

Hey! Personally I think Xoom is great, I've been using it for a couple years now. When you send money to an HDFC bank account or Punjabi National Bank it literally gets there in less than a minutes, its awesome. Plus, no fees if you send over $1,000. I would recommend trying it.*

Is this some kind of ad?
