Anyone use that fake AS in the tube with the red cap?

A little over a year ago I bought some of that fake AS locally, thinking it was the read deal. Not having anything to compare it with I thought it worked pretty good. When I realized what it really was I ordered a tube of the real ASIII for my next board. Even followed a link from the AS site for my purchase. It worked - sort of. But after lapping the HS, applying it several different times and following the instructions to the letter I was not impressed.

I've been using the ASIII ever since but recently swapped CPU's and ended up with idle temps at 50C. Cleaned and re-applied it two more times and got the same results. Just for grins I pulled the HS this weekend, cleaned it and the CPU with alcohol and applied the fake AS in the tube with the red cap just like I did with the real ASIII. Guess what? Temps dropped to 45C. I followed the AS instructions to the letter just like before and re-applied the HS in the same position just like before. No other changes were made!

I can't explain why this happened. I know ASII and III are considered excellent products by many and I am not slamming the AS people, but I can tell you that I followed the instructions to the letter and the fake stuff provided better results, then and now, and I don't plan on reaching for the ASIII again anytime soon.

In case you haven't seen the fake stuff with the red cap - Check here.

It's the one near the bottom next to the tube of real ASIII.

Remember - YMMV

Cheers!

LOL! Now that is a funny story, the fake stuff beating the real stuff. I guess it is time to stock up on the fake stuff!

AS 3 in particular takes up to 3 whole days to "cure". Also, that fake AS3 stuff, since no-one really knows who makes it or where it comes from, they have a hard time finding out what it is made of. For all you and I know it could be liquid silver and HIGHLY conductive. That's not to say that it is, but liquid silver would cool a hell of a lot better than AS 3 which would explain the big difference in temps.

Yep. It was an unintentional crap shoot from the start. It said "Silver," so like a catfish I took it hook line and sinker. As far as the temps, I have been running the SLK-800 with a low RPM fan - can't remember the name. Temps would be better if I turned up the air flow a bit, but I can live with it in the 40C's.

I plan to check my sensors in MBM again to make sure nothing has changed. I agree that 5 degrees over AS is a HUGE number but that's what I see. Sitting at 44C right now. Last week I was pushing 48-49 under a normal load. It did hit 53C once but the room was a little warm then.

I am planning on using the AS3 and the SLK-800A on my new computer. What speed would you suggest as a great middle ground for cooling vs. noise on the hsf?

A fan putting out 38-39db is considered to be by most an acceptable level. db vary from fan to fan and their total cfm also varies as does their top speed. The Ys-Tech adjustable fan series is quite popular solution for many.

You mean 28-29, right? 38-39 is quite loud.

I have an assortment of fans scattered around here, but since I undervolt my fans the noise \ performance benchmarks are sort of skewed. I think I have a combination of Antec, Sunon plus one very generic one in there right now. I was expecting better performance with three fans even undervolted, but I can live with it.

Still skeptical though about the fake AS that I am using. If I see any reason it should be pulled anytime soon I will wave a flag in here. But until that happens I would really be interested to know if anyone else has seen similar results. I am not a betting man, but I would have lost my jewels on this one if I were.
