Ok i called TDS Metrocom and they can't install DSL to my new home since SBC uses "PAIR GIAN" I don't know what this means, but basically TDS system is not set up to work on these lines, i guess it is a way for SBC to screw TDS out of customers even though they rent the lines from them or something to that affect.

so does anyone use SBC yahoo, how do you like this companies customer service and so forth...how are the speeds ?

IGNORE THIS PORTION, NO LONGER VALID

i am moving soon and i am wondering about changing from a cable line (Time warner) to a DSL it is a little cheaper but i have no experience with DSL...

i play online games so i am curious about latency and so forth ???

for you people that use DSL how do you like it compared to a cable modem ?

thanks for any info you can give me

I've got about 5 locations on TSD DSL. Service is great. Billing/accounting blows.

But that's generally the case for many ISP's. There's a gentleman here on the board that is in upper level tech support for TDS. I won't mention his user name but he may drop you a line to give you some inside info.

sorry i should have listed this info. currently we use tds for our phone company so that is why i asked

here is the link to their offers...only thing is you have to get a 2 year contract in order to get the better deal...which is something i would like to make sure it is good before i go that route

tds metrocom

thanks

i am sure this is supposed to be funny but i have no idea what you are saying lol

ok so i just called tds metrocom and asked if they have the service in the area

they don't !!!! DAMMITT it is because if SBC Yahoo....they have something called Pair Gian that doesn't allow TDS to use those lines or something along that so it looks like it is only through SBC

any thoughts on SBC Yahoo ?

also what are filters for on the phone lines ? i assume they help with the modem noise or something to that affect ?

leeland

Filters go on all the phone lines, and the DSL line...follow the directions. DSL uses high frequency, and speech low freq, filters make sure they dont interfere with eachother.

Pair gain sounds like some term for phone lines(guess), probally not designed to screw other company, but who knows.

I'm happy with SBC DSL, I dont use any of their software or other stuff, I just have router connect(used their software to register, then restored from ghost image), and use email, not other stuff.

I have 1.5/128 for a year @ $35 a month I'm happy with it. It's nice for gaming(not hosting) and downloading.

so you don't do alot of uploading ??? when u do what kinda speeds do you reach ? how close is it to the actual 128 kbps ? i just went on there site and came across the delux package

Delux Package

looks alright, but from what i am reading on www.dslreprts.com is that SBC blows...their customer service sucks and the speeds are alot lower than advertised. i know that the distance from the CO matters alot but i am just curious.

if you have Yahoo DSL and read this please do a speed test and post your results here i would appreciate the help

thanks again

Used the SBC 768k/128k package for a year and have been very happy with it. No downtime for the 1 year that I have used it and the download speeds range from 75kB to 85kB. Upload ranged from 12kB to 16kB. Can't complain much. 😀

It's bytes I was talking about. The rated speeds are always in bits.

ha ha ha sorry i am tired i wasn't looking that close at it 🙂

sounds good

one more question, you would have to switch the phone service then too i imagine right ?

I have SBC Yahoo DSL at my house in Dallas. For $28/month, it rules (don't know if this is a local special - they advertise $29.95 all the time in the Dallas Morning News, but we got this deal because we have SBC Long Distance and anonymous calling from them). I consistently got speeds about 150k/sec download, and about 12k/sec upstream - I lived less than a mile from the central office though, so YMMV.

I haven't had any issues with their service either, they had to send out a tech to get mine setup, because before I had their DSL installed, I had "old-school" DSL from a few years back (before the individual filters on the phone - it was installed by a tech with a filter outside the house and an old Alcatel modem) - this obviously interfered with the new setup. But the tech was able to get it working with the outside filter so that we did not have to filter the phones individually. The speeds on the DSL from SBC are the same as they were from two other third party ISPs that I had, and a lot cheaper - it used to be $40/month to SBC for the line, and then another $10 (to my first third-party DSL ISP) or $20 (to my second).

Its well worth it.

My dad is a DSL tech and filters are probably the worst way to deal with the issue. If it's possible ask the tech to split it into voice and data right at the jack, the signal will be much cleaner and your DSL speeds will improve. You won't have to use anymore dumb filters either.
