I have used single and RAID Quantum/Maxtor SNAP servers. Overall they are easy to use are are pretty much plug and play. The device is managed through a web console where you can set permissions and access control. Since ethernet is the communications interface, you get 12.5MB/sec of therothetical transfer. Although 4 - 6 seems to be the norm in daily use. The older SNAPs used IDE drives that were noisy as hell. Haven't used any of the recent one so I cannot comment on the acoustics.

I know killbat recently purchased a IEEE1394 shell and dumped in a 100GB HDD. He likes it and I am considering one myself. Storage appliances like those are nice is many people need to access the data across a network. For personal storage I would get a Firewire type device.
