I've been seeing a cardiologist monthly, a good guy who seems to know what he's talking about, to control hypertension that was only recently diagnosed. I quit smoking and started taking a low level BP medication and now my blood pressure's in check, but he cautioned me that I must lose 70 pounds or else my 40s will be... Problematic (I'm in my 30s).

We went the obvious ways but he put me on phentermine for a month because I've been overweight since I was a toddler and he said I could use a jump start. I protested slightly but he said that this will give me the jump start that will keep me positive and also change my eating habits psychologically over time through conditioning. It's kinda AMAZING so far - lost 6.5 pounds since monday and I'm never hungry. I have a normal / healthy breakfast, fruit juice for lunch (sometimes a meal supplement shake), and a normal healthy dinner.. I walk about 3 miles a day (3x a weel) to very little results before but am having incredibly more potent results now (my legs are rock hard already). I figure there must be some long term negatives but any harm with using it for a month under doctor's supervision? Is my doc a nutcase for putting me on this?

I've done some googling and I've heard mostly good things, but I'd like to hear if anyone here has tried it.

Thanks!

It's a low grade amphetimine, basically speed...was originally marketed with depressant to be taken at night to help you come down and sleep...most people over 30 will remember hearing about Phen-Fen and when it was banned for killing people. Just taking the Phen alone was only recently approved again I believe.

Short term use is probably fine with some risk of dependance, it is speed afterall...the problems before were caused by daily use of upper followed by downer causing cardiac problems.

It's coming back into vogue with some new data to suggest that it works pretty well. Not sure if AHA has a position paper on it
