I have one and find it actually quite useful. It's very much a higher end professional site, not an emo myspace wannabe. If you're looking for a job, or trying to find some good professional connections, it definitely has its uses.

LinkedIn is *NOT* a casual social networking site, so its generally not a good idea to network with people you barely know just because you post on the same forum.

MySpace is a place where insecure teens attempt to fill their internal void by collecting "friends".

LinkedIn is a place where insecure professionals attempt to fill their internal void by collecting "contacts".

That said, LinkedIn is a great service, when used properly. I know far too many people however who treat it like an adult MySpace, where they have 200 contacts and 80% of them are people they never met or worked with.

And Facebook is a place for college students to network... now it's beginning to push into the Linked In territory.

Linkedin is partnered with Google and stuff for Career Networking. There are some jobs that are only posted on Linkedin and not any other job search sites.

Anyone else wanna join the network? There are so many professionals here..

It's a great site. But like any professional network you have to be careful of who you link to. If I don't personally know you and you haven't proven yourself under my direction then I cannot put my name on the line for you.

I agree, that's pretty much how I handle it too. There might be a very few people on these forums that I feel I know well enough to consider linking to, but they are few and far between - and even then I would have to think about it.

LinkedIn has actually been the first one I have actively participated in as my links have been true professionals that I can leverage rather than some college kid. Nothing wrong with that, just that college kids are not those I hang out with nor need for anything in my life other than possibly new hires in their near future.

And I agree. I was just looking at my wife's list tonight to see if she had anyone from our company that I didn't have. I saw a name that didn't look familiar, so I asked her who it was.
"oh, that's _____'s friend from work." (he works at a different company)
"but you don't know him "
"yeah I know... he sent me an invite for some reason."

I have an account on Linkedin, and it's a great way to keep in touch with people I worked with (and find out where they are and what they are doing now)...

I got involved when I was looking for another contract last year.

The networking that seemed to go on was not very applicable to my situation at the time.
