How does it work out? I'm thinking of picking up an iphone 5 to use with it.

Unfortunately, freedompop does say that it's not available in my area...even though sprint reaches my home fine...but it should still work, no? Since it's mostly VOIP through an app.

i got freedompop for mom. quality was bad...EVEN on wifi! sometimes people can hear, sometimes nothing. that was $5/month
switched her over to Republic Wireless and somehow the quality is much better. she is happy now on the $13/month after taxes

If you are a non data, very low minute voice user, nothing beats Tmobile prepaid. $100 refill gives 1000 minutes that last 365 days, with rollover and restarting the timer on any refill. Lower refill amounts have poor value in minutes, $10 is only like 30 min, but I am a very low minute user so this year I rolled over my 1200 minute balance with a $10 refill making it good for another year, other years always $100.

I use ringplus. $10 a month and worth every penny. Granted, my expectations are low.

We use Freedompop at a condo that we use for relatives and guests when they are in town. We get 1 bar of service but it still does work for reasonably high speed internet but it's too terrible for VOIP. It's not a really fair assessment though - the condo is right on the edge of the service area and one bar of service frequently means lousy regular cell phone calls on carriers other than Freedompop.

Freedompop doesn't use Sprint generally, they are specifically tied to Sprint's WiMax network. So if Freedompop says you don't have service, you almost certainly won't have service - because WiMax isn't widely deployed.
